Whispering Pines Yurt: A Family's Rustic Glampin...

7 min read

Our family loves the outdoors, but we also appreciate a touch of comfort. We've dipped our toes into glamping over the years, but truly rustic camping still felt a little intimidating, especially with our kids, Emily (8) and David (10). So, when we stumbled upon Whispering Pines Yurt on Hipcamp (near 37.7456° N, 119.5932° W), it seemed like the perfect transitional camping experience to try. Could we bridge the gap between glamping conveniences and the call of the wild? Follow along as Sarah (@sarahscampkitchen) and Mark take Emily and David on a Yosemite adventure! Get ready for some yurt life!

Finding & Setting Up: Hipcamp and Yurt Life

The Hipcamp app is usually pretty spot on, but this time it got us close. Thankfully, Whispering Pines Yurt had really clear instructions for the last mile or so. It wasn’t hard to find, even in the fading evening light. We love using Hipcamp to find unique accommodations like this family yurt rental Yosemite.

The yurt itself was a Pacific Yurts structure, spacious and inviting. Acclimating the kids was surprisingly easy. The novelty of the round structure, the exposed beams, and the promise of sleeping in a "real" yurt sparked their imaginations instantly. It became their personal fort, and they were unpacking faster than I could say "pack it in, pack it out!"

Key features of the Whispering Pines Yurt:

  • Skylight: Perfect for daytime light and nighttime stargazing!
  • Wood-Burning Stove: Kept us toasty warm on a chilly evening.
  • Platform Bed: Comfortable and spacious, easily fit all four of us.

Rules & Regulations: Respecting the Space

The Hipcamp listing was very clear about the rules, which we appreciated:

  • Quiet Hours: 10 PM - 7 AM (easily managed with tired kids).
  • Pet Policy: No dogs allowed (important for allergy sufferers).
  • Waste Disposal: Pack it in, pack it out (leave no trace!).

These rules are in place to protect the pristine environment and ensure everyone enjoys their stay.

Bathrooms & Showers: Embracing Rustic Amenities

This was probably the biggest adjustment from glamping. Forget flushing toilets! Whispering Pines Yurt features a Nature's Head Composting Toilet. Honestly, it was much cleaner and less smelly than we anticipated. Mark, being the tech enthusiast, even appreciated the composting process!

The outdoor shower was…refreshing! Water temperature was dependent on the sun, so we recommend showering midday for the warmest experience. Privacy was decent, with the surrounding trees providing a natural screen. Prepare for a chilly but exhilarating shower - a key part of the rustic family camping Yosemite experience.

Activities: Hiking, Stargazing, and Campfire Cooking

This Hipcamp Yosemite family glamping experience wouldn't be complete without activities!

Hiking to Sentinel Falls

We started this trip from Yosemite Valley and decided to take advantage of the free shuttle service, which was very efficient. The drive to the trailhead from the Yurt would have taken us at least 45 minutes.

We decided on the easy hike to Sentinel Falls in Yosemite National Park. It's a 2.2-mile round trip, perfect for families with young children. The trail is relatively flat and well-maintained.

Must-pack items:

  • Water bottles (hydration is key!)
  • Snacks (for energy boosts along the way)
  • Sunscreen (Yosemite sun is strong!)
  • Hiking boots (for comfortable footing)

Stargazing with SkyView Lite

The yurt's skylight was made for stargazing! We downloaded the SkyView Lite app on our iPad Pro (Mark always has the latest gadgets) and had a blast identifying constellations. Despite being near Yosemite Valley, the light pollution wasn't too bad. We could clearly see the Big Dipper, Orion, and even a few shooting stars. It was a magical experience!

Family Campfire Cooking Yosemite Yurt

As @sarahscampkitchen, I couldn't resist whipping up some easy campfire meals! We used our trusty Coleman camp stove and Lodge cast iron skillet for these recipes:

Foil Packet Nachos:

Foil Packet Nachos

  • Tortilla chips
  • Shredded cheese
  • Canned black beans
  • Salsa
  • Optional pre-cooked chorizo
  • Wrap in foil and heat over the fire until cheese is melted.

Campfire Quesadillas:

  • Tortillas
  • Shredded cheese
  • Pre-cooked chicken or vegetables
  • Cook in a cast iron skillet until golden brown and cheese is melted.

S'mores Dip:

  • A layer of chocolate chips topped with marshmallows in a cast iron skillet.
  • Melt over the campfire.
  • Dip with graham crackers.

These recipes are quick, easy, and perfect for yurt camping near Yosemite with kids.
