Transylvania Through a Lens: Capturing the Soul...

6 min read

The mists cling to the ancient forests of Transylvania, whispering tales of centuries past. A land where history echoes in every stone, every village, and every towering castle, Transylvania holds an undeniable allure. For me, as a travel photographer, it's a place where light and shadow dance, creating a canvas of breathtaking beauty and captivating stories waiting to be told. My recent journey through this iconic region of Romania was nothing short of a photographer's dream, and I'm excited to share my experiences and insights with you, hoping to inspire your own adventure to capture the soul of Romania. Join me as I explore medieval festivals, majestic castles, stunning mountain hikes, and the culinary delights that make Transylvania so unique.

Sighisoara Medieval Festival: A Step Back in Time

Costumed performers at the Sighisoara Medieval Festival

My first stop was Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a perfectly preserved medieval citadel. Arriving during the Medieval Festival was like stepping through a time portal. The air buzzed with excitement, filled with the sounds of lively music, the clatter of armor, and the enticing aroma of roasting meats. Costumed performers paraded through the cobblestone streets, jousting knights clashed in the town square, and artisan stalls overflowed with handcrafted treasures. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way.

Navigating the bustling crowds and capturing the essence of the festival required a bit of photographic strategy. I experimented with shooting in aperture priority mode at f/2.8 to isolate subjects against the vibrant, yet often chaotic, background. This technique allowed me to draw attention to the expressions on the faces of the performers and the intricate details of their costumes.

Among the many stalls, one stood out: a craftsman selling hand-carved wooden masks. The masks, each unique and expressive, seemed to hold the secrets of ancient folklore. I spent a considerable amount of time photographing them, trying to capture the character and craftsmanship in each piece. The stall owner was friendly and very patient while I took the photos.

Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle): Beyond the Myth

Bran Castle nestled in the Carpathian Mountains

No trip to Transylvania is complete without a visit to Bran Castle, often referred to as Dracula's Castle. While the Dracula connection is certainly a draw, I wanted to focus on the castle's rich history and stunning architecture. Perched dramatically atop a rocky outcrop, Bran Castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding Carpathian landscape.

Exploring the castle's interior, I was struck by its intricate layout and the sense of history within its walls. Rather than dwelling on Dracula clichés, I learned about its role as a royal residence, home to Queen Marie of Romania. The castle’s history goes back further than that, and the location held strategic importance for many centuries. The view from the turrets is breathtaking.

For photographers, the best time to visit Bran Castle is during the golden hour. The warm, soft light bathes the castle in a magical glow, creating stunning photo opportunities. I recommend finding a vantage point slightly down the hill to capture the entire castle and its dramatic Carpathian backdrop. This also gives you a clear shot of the castle without hordes of tourists in the shot.

Carpathian Mountain Hike: Discovering Viscri

The fortified church of Viscri with haystacks in the foreground

Seeking to escape the crowds and experience the authentic Transylvanian countryside, I embarked on a challenging but rewarding hike in the Carpathian Mountains. The journey took me through dense forests, along winding roads, and past traditional houses adorned with colorful details. The final destination was the remote village of Viscri.

Viscri, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a hidden gem. Its fortified church, a stunning example of Saxon architecture, dominates the village landscape. The village still maintains a traditional way of life. The area is gorgeous.

To capture the vastness of the Carpathian landscape, I recommend using a wide-angle lens. The perspective is truly breathtaking. I waited patiently for a break in the clouds to capture a photo with dappled sunlight illuminating the village below, creating a scene of serene beauty.

Culinary Delights: A Taste of Romania

A plate of Sarmale (cabbage rolls) with polenta and sour cream

No trip is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Romanian food did not disappoint. I savored every bite of mămăligă (polenta) with cheese and sour cream, a hearty and comforting dish. The sarmale (cabbage rolls) filled with pork and rice were another favorite, a true taste of Romanian tradition. And of course, I couldn't resist the kürtőskalács (chimney cake), freshly baked over charcoal, its sweet aroma filling the air.

For the best sarmale I had during my trip, I highly recommend visiting La Copac in Brasov. This restaurant offers a warm and inviting atmosphere and serves authentic Romanian dishes with a smile. It's a local favorite for good reason!

Turda Salt Mine: An Underground Wonderland

Reflections in the salt lake at Turda Salt Mine

My final stop was the Turda Salt Mine, a truly unique and surreal experience. Descending into the depths of the earth, I entered a series of vast underground chambers, transformed into an extraordinary recreational space. The recreational opportunities, like bowling, boating, and more are amazing

The sheer scale of the mine is breathtaking. For photographers, the low light conditions present a challenge, so I highly recommend bringing a tripod to ensure sharp images. Focus on the reflections in the salt lake for interesting and abstract compositions. The lake reflects the surrounding chambers.
