Seville in Spring: A Romantic Tapas and Architec...

6 min read

Imagine this: strolling hand-in-hand with your loved one through sun-drenched streets, the intoxicating scent of orange blossoms filling the air. The gentle strumming of a Spanish guitar drifts from an open doorway, beckoning you closer. This is Seville in early spring – a city painted in vibrant colors, brimming with romance, and just waiting to be explored. We recently returned from our own magical getaway to Seville in late February/early March (just before the buzz of Semana Santa), and we’re here to share our insider tips for crafting the perfect romantic adventure. If you're a couple in your late 20s or early 30s craving a culturally rich European experience, Seville should be at the very top of your list.

Accommodation: Hotel Casa 1800 Sevilla – Your Romantic Oasis

Choosing the right accommodation can truly elevate your trip, and for us, Hotel Casa 1800 Sevilla was the perfect choice. Nestled in the heart of the Santa Cruz neighborhood, its location couldn't be better for exploring the city's charming labyrinthine streets. But the real highlight? The rooftop terrace. Every evening, we'd retreat there with a bottle of local wine to soak in breathtaking panoramic views of Seville as the sun dipped below the horizon. It was the perfect way to unwind and reconnect after a day of adventure.

Our Romantic Seville Itinerary: Five Days of Delight

Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable five-day itinerary, packed with romantic moments, cultural immersion, and delicious food:

Day 1: Arrival & Santa Cruz Stroll – Getting Lost in the Charm

One of the things we loved most about Seville was how walkable it is. After settling into our hotel, we immediately set out to explore the Santa Cruz neighborhood. The narrow, winding streets are a sensory feast, with buildings painted in warm ochre, burnt sienna, and crisp white. It's incredibly easy (and enjoyable) to get gloriously lost in this historic district. The soundscape is just as enchanting. Each morning, we were awakened by a chorus of birds. It truly is magical.

Day 2: River Ride & Royal Alcázar – A Blend of Nature and History

We started our second day with a refreshing bike ride along the Guadalquivir River. Several rental shops are conveniently located near the city center. The weather in late February was perfect for this – sunny and mild, with a gentle breeze. Later in the afternoon, we immersed ourselves in the splendor of the Alcázar of Seville. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-see! The Moorish architecture is simply breathtaking, with intricate tilework and lush gardens that transport you to another world. Don't miss the Hall of Ambassadors and the Patio de las Doncellas.

Day 3: Tapas Tour in Triana – A Culinary Adventure

No trip to Seville is complete without indulging in a tapas crawl, and the Triana neighborhood is the perfect place to do it. This vibrant district, located across the Guadalquivir River, is known for its lively atmosphere and authentic tapas bars. We spent the entire day hopping from bar to bar, sampling local delicacies.

Here were a few of our favorites:

  • Bar Juan Curro: A must-try is their espinacas con garbanzos (spinach with chickpeas). This simple yet flavorful dish is a Seville staple.

  • Las Golondrinas: Famous for its grilled pork tapas, this bustling bar is a true Triana institution.

To truly embrace the Seville experience, be sure to pair your tapas with a glass of chilled Manzanilla sherry, a local specialty. Also, don't miss the vibrant Triana market.

Day 4: Italica Roman Ruins & Paella Cooking Class – Stepping Back in Time

We decided to venture outside of Seville for a day trip to the Roman ruins of Italica, located just a short drive away. The highlight is the impressive amphitheater, one of the largest in the Roman world. Walking through the ruins, it’s easy to imagine the gladiatorial contests and public spectacles that once took place here. In the evening, we had a paella cooking class with a local chef. We learned to prepare this iconic Spanish dish from scratch, from selecting the freshest ingredients to mastering the perfect socarrat (the crispy crust at the bottom of the pan). And of course, the best part was enjoying the fruits (or rather, rice) of our labor!

Day 5: Market Delights & Flamenco Passion – A Sensory Finale

Our final day began with a visit to a local market, where we savored the taste of freshly pressed olive oil and the sweetness of juicy Seville oranges. Before leaving the market, we had a delightful breakfast of churros with chocolate at Bar El Comercio. Dipping warm, crispy churros into rich, dark chocolate is the perfect way to start the day. In the evening, we experienced a passionate flamenco show at Casa de la Memoria. The raw emotion, the intricate footwork, and the soulful music left us spellbound. It was the perfect way to end our romantic Seville adventure.

Food & Drink: A Culinary Love Affair

Seville is a paradise for food lovers. Our culinary journey was filled with unforgettable flavors, from the salty tang of Manzanilla sherry to the rich aroma of paella and the refreshing sweetness of fresh oranges. Be sure to try local specialties like salmorejo (a chilled tomato soup), pescaíto frito (fried fish), and torrijas (French toast, especially popular during Semana Santa).

Landscape & Architecture: A Visual Symphony

Seville's architecture is a captivating blend of Moorish, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The Alcázar of Seville is a prime example of Moorish influence, while the Seville Cathedral showcases Gothic and Renaissance grandeur. Keep an eye out for the intricate tilework, ornate facades, and hidden courtyards that adorn the city's buildings. The city also has Plaza de España which shows landscape and architecture. Don't forget to take a stroll through Maria Luisa Park. And of course, no description of Seville's landscape would be complete without mentioning the iconic orange trees that line the streets, their fragrant blossoms filling the air with a sweet, citrusy scent.

Transportation: Getting Around Seville with Ease

Seville is a very walkable city, and we found that exploring on foot was the best way to discover its hidden gems. However, for longer distances, the city also has a modern tram system and readily available taxis. As we mentioned earlier, renting bikes is a fantastic way to explore the Guadalquivir River area.
