Salar de Uyuni Photography Workshop: A Surreal Experience with Mateo Vargas

The biting Andean wind whipped around us, carrying whispers of salt and lithium. I pulled my scarf tighter, the high-altitude air already stealing my breath. But the discomfort was instantly forgotten as I gazed upon the blinding white expanse stretching to the horizon – the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat. This wasn't just a location for a photography workshop; it was a canvas, a mirror, and a gateway to the stars. As a landscape photographer specializing in surreal and minimalist compositions, the Salar has always been a source of endless inspiration, and this year, I had the privilege of sharing that inspiration with a group of passionate amateur photographers on a three-day immersive experience.

Mastering the Salar: Photographic Techniques on the Salt Flats

The Salar de Uyuni presents unique challenges and even more unique opportunities for photographers. The vastness can be overwhelming, but with the right techniques, it transforms into a playground of perspective and light. Our workshop focused on several key areas, each designed to unlock the Salar's photographic potential.

One of the most popular techniques we explored was forced perspective photography. The endless white plane offers an unparalleled backdrop for creating illusions of scale. We spent hours experimenting with positioning, using props like Pringles cans and toy dinosaurs to create humorous and mind-bending images. I guided the participants on how to use their camera settings – specifically aperture and focal length – to maximize the effect.

Of course, no Salar de Uyuni photography workshop is complete without capturing the mesmerizing mirror-like reflections. After a rainfall, the salt flats transform into a giant, shimmering mirror, perfectly reflecting the sky above. This is when the Salar truly earns its reputation as "where the Earth meets the sky". We spent an entire morning photographing these reflections, focusing on composition and capturing the subtle nuances of color and light. I taught the group how to use polarizing filters to enhance the reflections and reduce glare.

Photographing the Milky Way: Night Sky Magic

As darkness descended, the Salar revealed another of its wonders: the night sky. Far from city lights, the stars blaze with an intensity rarely seen. We dedicated an entire evening to night photography, teaching long exposure techniques to capture the Milky Way in all its glory. We used star trackers to compensate for the Earth’s rotation, resulting in sharp, detailed images of the stars without light trails. The participants learned how to calculate the optimal exposure time, aperture, and ISO settings for capturing the faintest details of the night sky.

The daytime light on the Salar can be incredibly harsh, creating strong shadows and blown-out highlights. To combat this, we explored various techniques for managing the light. We used graduated neutral density filters (GND filters) to balance the exposure between the bright sky and the darker foreground. We also focused on composition, using the vastness of the landscape to create minimalist and impactful images.

Exploring Incahuasi Island: A Cactus Oasis

No trip to the Salar is complete without a visit to Incahuasi Island, a rocky outcrop covered in giant cacti. This provided a welcome change of scenery and a new set of photographic opportunities. We spent an afternoon exploring the island, photographing the cacti against the backdrop of the salt flats and learning about the island's unique ecosystem.

A Taste of the Andes: Local Cuisine on the Salar

Food is an integral part of any travel experience, and our workshop was no exception. We embraced the local cuisine, focusing on quinoa-based dishes and sustainably sourced llama meat. One of the highlights was preparing and cooking a hearty quinoa stew over a portable stove right on the salt flats during sunset.

Cooking at such high altitude presented its own set of challenges. Water boils at a lower temperature, meaning it takes longer to cook food. But the effort was well worth it. As we sat huddled around the stove, sharing stories and laughter, the aroma of the stew filled the crisp air. The unique taste of the quinoa, combined with the stunning sunset views, created an unforgettable culinary experience. We also enjoyed traditional Andean snacks like salteñas, savory pastries filled with meat and vegetables.

The Ever-Changing Landscape: From White Expanse to Starry Skies

The Salar de Uyuni is a landscape of constant transformation. During the day, it's a blinding white expanse, a seemingly endless sea of salt. After rainfall, it transforms into a giant mirror, reflecting the sky above with breathtaking clarity. And at night, it becomes a canvas for the stars, the Milky Way stretching across the sky in a dazzling display.

The Salar's formation is just as fascinating as its appearance. It's the result of the evaporation of prehistoric lakes, leaving behind a thick crust of salt. Beneath this crust lie vast deposits of lithium, making Bolivia one of the world's leading producers of this valuable resource.

Viral Sensation: Walking Among the Stars

During the workshop, I experimented with creating a short viral video that captured the magic of the Salar. Here's a breakdown:

• HOOK (0-3 seconds): A black screen, complete silence. Suddenly, a single, intensely bright star bursts into view in the center of the frame.
• SCENE (3-15 seconds): A time-lapse sequence of the night sky over Salar de Uyuni, showcasing the Milky Way rotating and reflecting perfectly in the salt flats. The time-lapse, taken with a star tracker to avoid star trails, begins as the first stars appear and transitions to the full majesty of the Milky Way arching across the sky. The camera slowly pans across the reflection.
• TWIST (15-20 seconds): A silhouette of me walks into the frame, standing perfectly still and looking up at the sky. I take a step, my foot lands in a puddle, disrupting the perfectly reflective image of the stars, revealing that it’s all a reflection in shallow water. The sound of splashing water accompanies the reveal.

The video is designed to evoke surprise by revealing the puddle, showcasing the clarity of the time-lapse, and inspiring awe at the universe's vastness. The visual style is dreamy, ethereal, and cinematic, shot in 8K with a Sony a7S III and a wide-angle lens.

Social Media Magic: Capturing the Salar for the World

I also embraced the power of social media to share the beauty of the Salar. I used an Invisible Selfie Stick to capture 360-degree images, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the landscape. I even experimented with AI-powered sky replacement apps like Luminar AI to enhance the Milky Way in some of my photos, making them even more stunning for sharing on Instagram.
