Salar de Uyuni: Mateo's Photographic Journey

My latest adventure took me to the breathtaking Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, and let me tell you, it was an experience I'll never forget. Beyond the vast white expanse, I delved into the vibrant colours, bizarre landscapes, and delicious local flavours, and even ran a photography workshop! Buckle up, because I'm about to take you on a visual journey through this otherworldly corner of South America, sharing tips, tricks, and maybe even a few dinosaur-sized surprises!
Laguna Colorada: A Pink Paradise
Forget the Instagram filters, folks! Laguna Colorada is naturally pink, thanks to the Dunaliella salina algae thriving in its mineral-rich waters. The intensity of the pink changes throughout the day, but trust me, you want to be there around midday on a cloudless day to witness the most vibrant hues. The area near the thermal springs offers some of the best compositions, with the steaming water creating a beautiful contrast against the pink lagoon and the snow-capped mountains in the background.
And let's not forget the flamingos! You'll see them wading in the shallow waters, filtering the algae with their beaks. Watching these elegant birds go about their business, their pink plumage mirroring the lagoon, is a truly mesmerizing sight. Their behaviour is also fascinating; they often feed in synchronicity, creating a dance-like movement across the water. If you are into wildlife photography, Laguna Colorada Photography is a must!
Photography Workshop: Mastering the Brenizer Method
One of the highlights of my trip was running a photography workshop right on the Salar de Uyuni. It was an incredible experience sharing my passion with other photographers amidst such an awe-inspiring backdrop. We covered a range of techniques, but one that really resonated with the participants was the Brenizer Method, also known as the "bokeh panorama."
This technique allows you to create portraits with an incredibly shallow depth of field and a wide field of view, resulting in a dreamy, almost surreal effect. I used my trusty Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM lens for this, and the results were stunning. Several participants told me that the technique transformed their portrait work on the flats, giving them a much different perspective on portrait taking while on the tour. Salar de Uyuni: An Otherworldly Expanse
Words can barely describe the feeling of standing on the Salar de Uyuni. It's like being on another planet – a vast, white expanse that stretches as far as the eye can see. The sheer scale of it is mind-boggling. You can drive for hours and still be surrounded by nothing but salt.
Look closely, and you'll notice the intricate salt polygons that cover the surface. These natural formations create a mesmerizing pattern across the landscape. You'll also find the "ojos de sal" (salt eyes), which are small holes in the salt crust where groundwater bubbles to the surface. These add a touch of unexpected life to the barren landscape. Salteñas in Uyuni: A Culinary Delight
Okay, let's talk food. Forget the tourist traps! If you're in Uyuni and craving a salteña, you need to head to Salteñas Don Lucho on Avenida Arce. Trust me, these are the real deal.
What makes a salteña so special? It's all about the gelatin inside. When heated, the gelatin melts into a succulent broth, preventing the filling from drying out. Order the salteña de pollo (chicken) with salsa picante (spicy sauce) – you won't regret it. The burst of flavour and the juicy broth will have you coming back for more.

Incahuasi Island: Cacti in the Clouds
Rising out of the salt flats like a mirage, Incahuasi Island is a rocky outcrop covered in giant cacti. These ancient plants, some of which are hundreds of years old, create a truly surreal landscape.
Climb to the top of the island, and you'll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the salt flats stretching in every direction. The contrast between the rocky island, the towering cacti, and the endless white expanse is simply breathtaking. It is an image you'll never forget, whether you capture it on film or not!
Viral Video Concept: A Dino-Sized Snack Attack
Time for a little behind-the-scenes story! I'm always looking for ways to create engaging content for social media, and the Salar de Uyuni, with its unique perspective possibilities, presented the perfect opportunity. Here's a peek at a viral video concept I cooked up:
Imagine this: a close-up of a couple laughing as they're about to share a salteña. Pixar-style lighting and composition. The camera slowly orbits the couple. Suddenly, a miniature toy dinosaur (T-Rex) rapidly lunges into the frame. The twist? Forced perspective makes it look like the dinosaur is stealing a bite of the salteña right from their hands!

And speaking of visuals, I also created a cinemagraph that I'm really proud of. It features the Bolivian flag waving atop Incahuasi Island, with the salt flats perfectly still beneath it. The sky is partly cloudy, with sunlight breaking through, creating a dynamic contrast. It's a subtle but powerful way to capture the essence of this incredible place.
