Ryan Campground Joshua Tree Review: Tech Camping Under the Stars
Are you dreaming of a Joshua Tree camping adventure, but can't bear to leave your tech behind? Look no further! The Techie Trekkers – that’s us, Sarah and Mark (your data-obsessed planner and gadget-hacking engineer, respectively) and our digital native kids, Emily and David – recently spent a memorable weekend at Ryan Campground (33.9835° N, 116.1630° W). We’re here to give you the lowdown on bringing your love of all things tech to this stunning desert landscape. From battling the desert scrub for Starlink signal to capturing the Milky Way with our iPhones, we’ll share our experience, tips, and maybe even a cautionary tale or two about relying too much on technology in the great outdoors. Join us as we explore Ryan Campground through a tech-tinted lens!
Finding Our Oasis: Arrival and Campsite Setup at Ryan Campground
The drive to Ryan Campground from the Joshua Tree West Entrance is straightforward. Follow Park Boulevard east for about 17 miles. The campground is well-signed and easy to spot on your left. We pulled into campsite #42, which was conveniently located near the vault toilets – a definite plus for family camping!
Setting up camp is where the "Techie" part of our name really kicks in. First up was our trusty REI Co-op Base Camp 6 tent. Plenty of room for the four of us, and incredibly durable for desert conditions. Then came the comfy seating, courtesy of our NEMO Stargaze Recliner Luxury camp chairs. These are perfect for relaxing around the campfire and, of course, stargazing!
Now for the real challenge: getting our Starlink satellite internet up and running. This is where we hit our first snag. The desert scrub around our campsite, while providing some much-needed shade, also severely hampered our signal acquisition. Mark spent a good hour repositioning the dish, battling frustration and prickly bushes, before we finally achieved a stable connection. Pro tip: scout your campsite beforehand on Google Maps satellite view to identify potential obstructions and bring a long extension pole if necessary.
Campground Commandments: Rules & Regulations in Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree National Park is a protected environment, and respecting the rules is crucial. We made sure to familiarize ourselves with the regulations before our trip, and we encourage you to do the same.
One regulation we were particularly mindful of was drone use. Joshua Tree requires permits for all drone flights, and flying is restricted to specific designated areas. Check the National Park Service website for the most up-to-date information. We planned our drone videography session carefully to comply with all regulations, ensuring we were only flying in approved zones and at appropriate times.
The Leave No Trace principles are especially important in the fragile desert ecosystem. We packed out everything we packed in, including all trash and food scraps. Water conservation is also critical. We minimized our water usage by using biodegradable soap, taking quick "bird baths" instead of full showers, and using water-saving techniques for cooking and cleaning.
Quiet hours are strictly enforced after 10 PM. We respected the noise level restrictions by turning off our music and keeping our voices down. It's all about being considerate of your fellow campers and preserving the peaceful atmosphere of the park.
The Vault Toilet Chronicles: Bathroom & Showering Realities
Let's be honest: vault toilets are not the highlight of any camping trip. Ryan Campground only offers vault toilets, so be prepared. To make the experience a little more bearable, we brought a few essential items.
First, we packed small essential oil diffusers to help mask the odor. Poo powder can also be a lifesaver. For personal hygiene, we highly recommend a portable bidet like the Tushy Travel. These are compact, easy to use, and make a world of difference. We also used composting toilet seat liners from Nature's Miracle for added cleanliness.

There are no showers at Ryan Campground, so you'll need to get creative with your hygiene. We brought a solar shower bag, which worked surprisingly well after heating up in the desert sun. Just be mindful of water conservation! Baby wipes are also a handy option for quick cleanups.
Adventures Under the Desert Sky: Activities at Ryan Campground
Ryan Campground is the perfect basecamp for exploring Joshua Tree's many wonders. We packed our weekend with a mix of daytime hikes and nighttime adventures.
Astrophotography: Capturing the Cosmos
As avid astrophotographers, we were eager to take advantage of Joshua Tree's dark skies. We brought our iPhone 13 Pro Max and a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Mini tracking mount. This setup allowed us to capture stunning images of the Milky Way over Skull Rock, the Andromeda Galaxy, and a time-lapse of the night sky. The lack of light pollution makes Joshua Tree a dream destination for astrophotography enthusiasts.
Geocaching: A Techie Treasure Hunt
During the day, we embarked on a geocaching adventure using the Geocaching app. We found several geocaches near the Hidden Valley Nature Trail, adding a fun and interactive element to our hike. Geocaching is a great way to explore new areas and discover hidden gems.
Drone Videography: Soaring Above the Landscape
As mentioned earlier, we carefully planned a drone videography session, adhering to all park regulations. Using our DJI Mavic 3, we captured stunning footage of the sunset over the Joshua Tree landscape. The golden hour light, combined with the unique rock formations and Joshua trees, created some truly breathtaking visuals.
Gear Up: High-Tech Camping Essentials
Here's a rundown of some of our favorite high-tech camping gear that we brought to Ryan Campground:
- Goal Zero Yeti 1500X Solar-Powered Generator: This is our go-to power source for camping. It's quiet, reliable, and can be charged with solar panels. However, as you'll see in our viral video, even the best technology can sometimes fail! Goal Zero Yeti 1500X
- Starlink Satellite Internet: While we faced some challenges with connectivity, Starlink allowed us to stay connected and share our adventures in real-time. Starlink
- Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker: Because even in the wilderness, a good cup of coffee is non-negotiable. This portable espresso maker is compact and easy to use. Wacaco Nanopresso

Tech Trouble in Paradise: A Cautionary Tale
Our camping trip wasn't without its hiccups. As you can see in our viral video (linked below!), our Goal Zero Yeti 1500X solar-powered generator decided to give up the ghost right as the sun went down, leaving us in the dark. This unexpected power outage served as a reminder that even with the best technology, it's important to be prepared for anything. We quickly adapted, pulling out our headlamps and enjoying a night under the stars, unplugged and connected to nature.
