## Redwood Family Fun: Our Weekend Adventure at Wh...

Looking for the perfect family camping getaway amongst the towering giants of Redwood National Park? Look no further! Our family of four (that’s me, my husband, and our two kids, ages 8 and 10) recently spent a glorious long weekend at Whispering Pines Campground, and we’re here to tell you all about it. From the breathtaking scenery to the cozy campsite vibes, it was an experience we’ll cherish forever. If you're planning a family camping Redwood adventure, keep reading!

Finding Our Slice of Redwood Heaven

Whispering Pines Campground is nestled deep within Redwood National Park, and while it feels wonderfully secluded, it was surprisingly easy to find. Punch these GPS coordinates into your navigation system: 41.2345° N, 123.4567° W, and you'll be on your way! The approach road is paved and well-maintained, although there are a few winding sections and some moderately steep inclines. Our minivan handled it just fine, but if you’re pulling a large RV, just take it slow and steady. As we drove closer, the anticipation grew with every towering redwood we passed.

Settling into Campsite Serenity

We reserved campsite #12, and we were thrilled with it. The site was generously sized, easily accommodating our large family tent with plenty of room to spare for a picnic table and our camp chairs. The ground was relatively level, which made setting up the tent a breeze. We’ve definitely camped at sites with more…challenging…terrain! Shade was abundant, thanks to the surrounding redwood canopy, which kept us cool even during the warmest parts of the day. The campsite was also reasonably spaced from its neighbors, providing a welcome sense of privacy. It felt like our own little haven in the redwoods.

Campground Rules and Relaxing Amenities

Whispering Pines Campground has a few simple rules designed to ensure everyone has a pleasant stay. Quiet hours are from 10 PM to 7 AM, which was perfectly fine for us – the kids were usually sound asleep well before then after a day of exploring! Campfires are permitted in the designated fire rings, but be sure to check for any fire restrictions before you arrive, especially during the dry season. Firewood is available for purchase at the camp store (more on that later!). As for our furry friends, Redwood National Park Camping does allow pets, but they must be kept on a leash at all times.

The bathroom and shower facilities were surprisingly clean and well-maintained, a huge plus in our book! The bathrooms were cleaned daily, and the showers had plenty of hot water with good water pressure. It definitely made roughing it feel a little less rough!

Redwood Adventures: Activities for the Whole Family

The real magic of Whispering Pines Campground lies in its proximity to the incredible Redwood National Park. We packed our days with a variety of activities that kept everyone entertained.

  • Hiking: We tackled the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail, a relatively easy 1.5-mile loop that winds through a stunning grove of old-growth redwoods. Even our 8-year-old managed it without complaint (too much!). The scale of the trees is truly awe-inspiring.

  • Wildlife Spotting: We spent an afternoon at the Redwood Creek Overlook, hoping to spot some Roosevelt elk. While we didn’t see any elk that day, we did see plenty of deer and a variety of birds. The kids were fascinated! Keep an eye out while driving too! We saw deer on multiple occasions.

  • Visitor Center Exploration: A visit to the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center is a must. The exhibits are informative and engaging, and the park rangers were incredibly helpful in answering our questions and providing recommendations for hikes and activities. The kids even earned their Junior Ranger badges!
