Pine Ridge Campground, Asheville: A Family Camping Review (Mosquitoes Included!)

Hey fellow adventure-seeking families! We just got back from a long weekend at Pine Ridge Campground in beautiful Asheville, NC, and wanted to share our experience. We’re the Millers – two parents in our early 40s (feeling older after lugging all that gear!) and two kids, ages 8 and 10. We’re not camping pros by any stretch (around 5 trips under our belts), but we know what we like – and what makes for a successful family camping trip. So, grab your s'mores fixings and settle in for our honest review!
Getting There: Are We There Yet? (and Other Adventures)
Finding Pine Ridge Campground was surprisingly easy. The GPS took us right to the entrance, and the roads were well-maintained. No white-knuckle driving on dirt roads this time, thank goodness! Cell service was a bit spotty as we got closer, so download your directions ahead of time, just in case.
Campsite Chronicles: Our Home Away From Home (With Bugs)
Our campsite was…adequate. Let’s be honest, it wasn’t the most spacious we’ve ever had, but it worked. It was mostly level, which is a huge win when you’re trying to get a decent night’s sleep in a tent. There was some shade, but definitely bring extra tarps if you're camping in the summer. The ground was a mix of dirt and gravel, so bring a good ground cloth for your tent. We didn't have any unique features on our campsite, like a stream or view, but we were close to a path leading to the playground!
Rule Britannia (or, Campground Rules): Keeping the Peace
The campground rules were clearly posted at the entrance and throughout the campground. Quiet hours were from 10 PM to 6 AM, which was great for getting the kids (and ourselves) some sleep. Pets were allowed on a leash, and there were designated pet waste stations (thank you!). Fire restrictions were in place due to dry conditions, so we were only allowed to use the fire pit with a screen. Overall, the rules were reasonable and helped maintain a peaceful atmosphere, except for the occasional rogue squirrel stealing our marshmallows.
Bathroom Breaks: The Good, the Bad, and the Potty
Okay, let’s talk bathrooms. They were…functional. Cleanliness was a bit of a mixed bag – they seemed to get cleaned regularly, but you know, campers. There were enough facilities for the number of campers, and they were generally stocked with soap and toilet paper. Lighting was decent at night.
Shower Power: Washing Away the Grime (Hopefully)
The showers were… an experience. Let’s just say bring flip-flops. They weren't spotless, but they also weren't the worst we've seen. Hot water was plentiful, which was a major plus. There were changing areas, but they were a bit cramped. The showers were free to use, which is always a bonus!
Activity Central: Fun for Everyone (or at Least Most of Us)
Pine Ridge Campground and the surrounding area offered a ton of activities. Within the campground, there was a playground that the kids loved. We also spent an evening roasting marshmallows around the campfire (after battling the aforementioned rogue squirrel).

A short drive away (about 30 minutes), we went hiking on a beautiful trail with scenic overlooks. The kids even managed to make it most of the way without complaining! Asheville itself is also nearby, offering tons of restaurants, shops, and attractions.

Overall Verdict: Would We Go Back?
Overall, we give Pine Ridge Campground 3.5 out of 5 stars. It's a decent campground with plenty of activities for families. The location is great, close to Asheville and lots of hiking trails. The downsides were the slightly cramped campsites and the less-than-sparkling bathrooms. We would recommend this campground to other families, especially those with younger children who would enjoy the playground. It’s a great option for families looking for a convenient and affordable camping trip near Asheville.
Our highlights were the hiking and the campfire, and the lowlight was the intensity of the mosquitos. Bring bug spray! This campground would be perfect for families with kids aged 5-12 who are looking for a mix of outdoor activities and relaxation.
