Finding and Setting Up Camp

Finding North Pines Campground was a breeze. The campground is well-marked and easily accessible from the main roads within Yosemite Valley. We drove directly to our site, #077, a larger site that thankfully lived up to its billing! Its location near the Merced River was a definite plus, the constant sound of the water providing a soothing backdrop to our stay. While the terrain was a bit rocky, setting up our tent was surprisingly easy. The relatively flat areas within the site made pitching our Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tent straightforward.

Yosemite Rules: Staying Compliant

Yosemite National Park has specific rules designed to protect both visitors and the environment. It's essential to be aware of these before you arrive.

  • Bear Canisters: The mandatory use of a Garcia Bear Canister is non-negotiable. All food and scented items must be stored in these canisters to prevent attracting bears.
  • Firewood: Collecting firewood within the park is strictly prohibited. You can only use purchased firewood, which helps prevent the spread of invasive species and protects the forest.
  • Generator Use: Generator use is limited to specific hours of the day. Be mindful of the designated times to avoid disturbing other campers.

Bathrooms & Showers

North Pines Campground offers convenient bathroom facilities, including flush toilets, sinks, and mirrors. While not luxurious, they were well-maintained and cleaned regularly. The cleanliness ratings posted in the bathrooms were consistently marked as "Good," which was reassuring. For those craving a hot shower, Curry Village is a short drive away and offers hot showers for $5.

Activities in Yosemite Valley

Yosemite Valley is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise, offering a wide range of activities for all skill levels.

Rock Climbing

For beginner rock climbers, Camp 4 is a legendary spot with numerous accessible routes. We highly recommend taking a lesson with the Yosemite Mountaineering School to learn the ropes. A classic beginner route is "Swan Slab Gully" (5.6), which offers stunning views and a manageable challenge.

Stargazing

Yosemite Valley transforms into a celestial wonderland at night. The dark skies provide incredible stargazing opportunities. We used the SkyView Lite app to identify constellations, planets, and satellites. For the best stargazing experience, we recommend driving up to Sentinel Dome. The panoramic views from the dome are breathtaking, and the lack of light pollution makes for an unforgettable night under the stars.

Photography

As avid landscape photographers, we were in heaven. Using our Canon EOS R5 with a 24-70mm lens, we captured countless stunning images of Yosemite Valley. One of our favorite shots was El Capitan at sunset. We used the following settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/60 second to capture the vibrant colors and details of the granite face.

Biking

Renting bikes from Yosemite Valley Lodge is a fantastic way to explore the valley. The paved paths along the Merced River offer a leisurely and scenic ride. We particularly enjoyed the loop to Mirror Lake, which provides stunning reflections of Half Dome and the surrounding cliffs.

Gourmet Camp Meal: Anniversary Style

To celebrate our anniversary, we prepared a gourmet camp meal that was both delicious and relatively easy to make. We grilled salmon with lemon-dill sauce, asparagus, and quinoa.

  • Grilled Salmon with Lemon-Dill Sauce: We marinated salmon fillets in lemon juice, olive oil, dill, salt, and pepper. We then grilled them on a propane stove for about 4 minutes per side until cooked through. The salmon was purchased from the Yosemite Valley grocery store.
  • Grilled Asparagus: We grilled the asparagus alongside the salmon, drizzling it with olive oil and seasoning it with salt and pepper.
  • Quinoa: We cooked quinoa in a pot with vegetable broth for a healthy and flavorful side dish.

For dessert, we made campfire cones: graham cracker, marshmallows, and chocolate chips melted in a cone wrapped in foil.

Challenges in Yosemite

While our camping trip was mostly idyllic, we did encounter a few challenges.

Wildlife Encounters

We had a black bear sighting near our cooking area, which was a bit nerve-wracking. We also saw deer grazing near our campsite on several occasions. It's crucial to practice safe food storage practices and keep a safe distance from wildlife.

Crowds and Parking

Yosemite Valley can be incredibly crowded, especially during peak season. Finding parking near trailheads was often difficult, requiring patience and early starts. Arriving early in the morning or visiting during the shoulder season can help mitigate the crowds.

Our Camping Gear

We rely on quality gear to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. In addition to our Big Agnes tent, we used Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite sleeping pads and Sea to Summit sleeping bags. For ambient lighting, we love the Biolite AlpenGlow 500 lantern, which provides a warm and adjustable glow.

Ambiance: Immersed in Nature

The ambiance at North Pines Campground was truly special. The sounds of the Merced River flowing nearby created a soothing and peaceful atmosphere. The scent of pine trees filled the air, and the towering granite cliffs surrounding the campground provided a sense of awe and wonder. The Camping near Merced River Yosemite is an experience you won't forget! The combination of these elements created a deeply immersive natural experience.

Is North Pines Good for Families?

Yes, Family Friendly Camping Yosemite can be had at North Pines! While our trip was an anniversary celebration, we noticed plenty of families enjoying the campground. The proximity to amenities, easy access to trails, and ranger programs make it a great option for families with children. Just be mindful of bear safety and keep a close eye on young children near the river.

15-Second Viral Video Concept

HOOK (0-3 seconds): Begin in medias res. Start with a cinematic 4K time-lapse of the sun rapidly setting behind El Capitan, filmed using a GoPro Hero 11. The changing colors on the granite face create a dramatic and visually stunning effect.

SCENE (3-10 seconds): Transition to a hyperlapse video of Maria and David rapidly cycling along the paved path near the Merced River, shot on a DJI Osmo Mobile 6 gimbal. The camera uses a low-angle shot to emphasize the towering trees. Bright, golden hour lighting enhances the stunning scenery of Yosemite Valley. The pacing is fast, creating a sense of energy and adventure.

TWIST (10-15 seconds): Suddenly, a black bear unexpectedly appears on the path, bursting from the trees, causing the couple to stop rapidly. Maria gasps audibly. David zooms in with his camera, capturing the bear glancing directly at the camera before ambling off into the woods.
