Namibia: Where Adventure Meets Conservation with Nomadic Narratives
Namibia. Just the name conjures images of vast, untamed landscapes, dramatic coastlines, and incredible wildlife. As Ben Carter, a 28-year-old adventure filmmaker behind "Nomadic Narratives" on YouTube, I've traveled the world, but my recent 14-day journey to Namibia was unlike anything I've experienced. I set out to capture the raw beauty of this country while documenting its commitment to sustainable tourism and wildlife conservation. This Namibia travel blog will give you a peek into my adventures, from the bustling streets of Windhoek to the desolate shores of the Skeleton Coast. Prepare to be inspired!
Windhoek: A Capital Encounter
My Namibian adventure began in Windhoek, the capital city. After checking into the luxurious Hotel Heinitzburg, I spent the first few days acclimatizing and capturing establishing shots. The city has a unique blend of African and European influences, reflected in its architecture and culture. One of the first things I experienced was the vibrant Windhoek Karneval (WiKa). The energy was infectious as I filmed the colorful parade, interviewing performers about the traditions behind their costumes and dances. It was a great way to dive straight into the Namibian spirit!
Food is an essential part of any travel experience, and Windhoek didn't disappoint. I visited "The Meat Co," a local butchery, where I filmed the process of making Biltong, a cured meat snack that's a Namibian staple. The rich, savory flavor was incredible! For a truly authentic experience, I ventured into Katutura township and sampled Kapana from a street vendor. Watching the preparation and talking to the locals about the significance of this grilled beef dish was a highlight. The warmth and hospitality of the people were truly touching.
During my time in Windhoek, I also connected with a representative from the Namibia Nature Foundation, laying the groundwork for the conservation stories I'd be exploring later in my trip.
Swakopmund and the Namib Desert: A Clash of Worlds
Leaving the city behind, I headed west to Swakopmund, a coastal town bordering the immense Namib Desert. The contrast between the cool Atlantic coast and the towering sand dunes was surreal.
Sandboarding Adventures in the Namib Desert
Of course, I couldn't resist experiencing the thrill of sandboarding! Strapping on a board and hurtling down the massive dunes was an adrenaline rush. I even managed to capture some insane POV footage with my GoPro, including a spectacular wipeout that left me covered head-to-toe in sand – all in the name of filmmaking, right? The vastness and desolation of the desert were truly awe-inspiring, and filming the landscape emphasized its raw, untouched beauty.

A MUST SEE is to wake up early and watch the sunrise at Dune 45 in Sossusvlei! You can expect to climb the dune in darkness, but the views are unbelievable.
Etosha National Park: In Search of the Black Rhino
Etosha National Park was undoubtedly a highlight of my trip. This vast conservation area is teeming with wildlife, and I joined a guided game drive, hoping to capture footage of the elusive black rhino.
Ethical Black Rhino Tracking in Etosha
I was incredibly fortunate to witness one of these magnificent creatures drinking at a waterhole. It was an emotional moment, a stark reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.
I also had the privilege of interviewing a conservationist from Save the Rhino Trust Namibia, https://savetherhinotrust.org/, about their vital work in protecting these endangered animals. Hearing firsthand about the challenges they face and their dedication to preserving the species was truly inspiring.
The park itself is dominated by a massive salt pan, stretching as far as the eye can see. The wildlife encounters were constant – elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras – all gathering at the waterholes, providing incredible opportunities for filming.
Damaraland: Ancient Art and Desert Elephants
The rugged landscapes of Damaraland were a dramatic change of scenery. This region is known for its ancient rock art sites and its population of desert-adapted elephants.
Discovering Ancient Rock Art in Damaraland
Exploring the rock engravings, some dating back thousands of years, felt like stepping back in time. These intricate depictions of animals and human figures offered a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of the people who once inhabited this harsh environment.
Spotting the desert elephants was another unforgettable experience. These incredible animals have adapted to survive in the arid conditions, traveling long distances in search of water and food.
The Skeleton Coast: A Haunting Beauty
My journey concluded with a visit to the Skeleton Coast. This remote and desolate stretch of coastline is known for its shipwrecks, the skeletal remains of vessels claimed by the unforgiving Atlantic Ocean.
The haunting beauty of the Skeleton Coast is something you have to experience to truly appreciate. The shipwrecks, slowly decaying against the backdrop of the crashing waves, created an eerie and unforgettable scene.

The sheer remoteness and isolation of the region were striking. It felt like being at the edge of the world. The moody, overcast light provided the perfect conditions for capturing the dramatic scenery. For any photographer, this place is a dream location.
