Medellin: More Than a Memory, It's a Transformation
Medellin, Colombia. The name alone used to conjure images of a troubled past. But erase those outdated notions because the Medellin of today is a revelation. As a travel writer, I've been fortunate enough to witness incredible transformations around the world, but Medellin's is truly something special. It's a city that has risen from the ashes, blossoming into a vibrant cultural hub that captivates with its energy, its art, and its spirit. And the year-round pleasant climate, a constant 72°F (22°C) makes this an amazing place to visit any time. Nicknamed "The City of Eternal Spring," Medellin nestled within the Aburrá Valley is a sensory delight. Join me as I share my recent experiences in this incredible city, from the breathtaking Feria de las Flores to the poignant street art of Comuna 13, and why I believe Medellin is more than just a destination, it’s a transformation.
A Floral Fiesta: My Experience at the Feria de las Flores
The Feria de las Flores Medellin (Flower Festival) is an event unlike any other. For ten days, the city explodes with color, music, and an overwhelming sense of joy. I was lucky enough to be there for the highlight, the "Desfile de Silleteros" parade. This isn't just a parade; it's a testament to the resilience and artistry of the local farmers from the nearby village of Santa Elena.
Imagine this: farmers, known as silleteros, carrying elaborate flower arrangements – silletas – on their backs. Some of these arrangements weigh over 150 pounds! Each silleta is a masterpiece, telling a story through its vibrant blooms. The sheer dedication and pride of the silleteros is palpable. As they passed, the crowd erupted in cheers, shouting "¡Viva la Feria!". This parade is one of the things to do in Medellin and worth traveling for!
Aside from the parade, the Parque de las Luces is transformed into a stunning display of floral artistry. Every corner is bursting with vibrant colors, the air thick with the sweet scent of thousands of blooms. Wandering through the displays, surrounded by music and dancing, I felt completely immersed in the celebratory atmosphere.

Comuna 13: Where Art Tells a Story
My visit to Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour was one of the most moving experiences of my trip. This neighborhood, once synonymous with violence and despair, has undergone an incredible transformation through art. The colorful street art tells powerful stories of resilience, community, and hope.
Walking through the streets, I was struck by the vibrant murals, each one a testament to the neighborhood's rebirth. Our guide explained the stories behind many of the pieces, pointing out murals depicting the struggles of the past and the aspirations for the future. I learned about the artists, many of whom are residents of Comuna 13, using their art to heal and inspire.
One mural that particularly resonated with me was a depiction of a phoenix rising from the ashes, a powerful metaphor for Comuna 13's journey. Another powerful piece showed hands of different colors reaching up to the sky, symbolizing unity. Today, Comuna 13 is a symbol of hope. Is it safe to walk around Comuna 13 Medellin? Absolutely. The community welcomes tourists to learn its history. This tour is a must and it highlights the important role of art in urban renewal and how its residents created the vibrant culture.
Ascending to Parque Arvi: A Metrocable Adventure
For breathtaking panoramic views of the Aburrá Valley landscape, a ride on the Medellin Metrocable Parque Arvi is essential. This cable car system, originally designed to connect marginalized communities to the city center, now provides access to the stunning Parque Arvi, a sprawling ecological park high in the mountains.
As the Metrocable ascended, I was mesmerized by the views. The contrast between the dense urban sprawl of Medellin and the lush green mountains was striking. It was a reminder of the city's unique location nestled between the Andes. Reaching Parque Arvi, I explored hiking trails, breathing in the fresh mountain air, a world away from the bustling city below. You can take the metro and connect to the Metrocable. It's an easy way to visit the park!
Botero's World: A Visit to the Museo de Antioquia
No trip to Medellin is complete without a visit to the Museo de Antioquia Fernando Botero. This museum houses an extensive collection of works by Fernando Botero, Medellin's most famous artist. Botero's signature style of exaggerated proportions is immediately recognizable and undeniably captivating.
Standing before his sculptures, particularly "The Bird of Peace," I was struck by the artist's ability to convey profound emotions through his unique aesthetic. "The Bird of Peace", first bombed in 1995 and later replaced by Botero, serves as a symbol of resilience for the city. The museum provided valuable insights into the history and people of the region. The exaggerated forms, often depicting everyday life in Colombia, invite the viewer to see the world through a different lens. The museum itself is free to enter, and its location in Plaza Botero means that you'll see even more of his art in the public space surrounding the building.

A Taste of Colombia: Flavors of Medellin
Food is an integral part of any travel experience, and Medellin is no exception. My culinary journey began with the iconic Bandeja Paisa recipe, a hearty platter that embodies the region's traditional flavors. This mountain of food includes red beans, rice, chicharrón (fried pork belly), fried egg, avocado, and arepa (cornmeal cake). Each component offered a unique texture and taste, creating a satisfying and unforgettable meal.
Beyond Bandeja Paisa, I enjoyed countless Arepas con Queso from street vendors, the warm, cheesy goodness a perfect snack any time of day. And of course, no visit to Colombia is complete without trying Aguardiente, the local anise-flavored liquor. Its strong, distinctive taste is an acquired one, but it’s a true taste of Colombian culture. Be sure to try other flavors as well!
Medellin Beyond the Narcos Myth
It’s impossible to talk about Medellin without acknowledging its past. Many people still associate the city with Pablo Escobar and the violence of the Medellin Cartel. While this history is undeniably part of Medellin's story, it’s crucial to understand that the city has moved far beyond that era. Today, Medellin is a safe and welcoming city for tourists, with a vibrant culture and a resilient spirit.
The transformation is visible everywhere, from the innovative infrastructure projects to the thriving arts scene. While acknowledging the past, Medellin is firmly focused on the future. I found the people to be incredibly warm, open, and proud of their city's progress.
A City of Hope: My Emotional Response
Witnessing Medellin's energy and spirit of transformation deeply moved me. This is a city that has faced immense challenges and emerged stronger, more vibrant, and more hopeful than ever before. The resilience of the people, their dedication to their community, and their unwavering optimism are truly inspiring.
Medellin is a testament to the power of human spirit, a reminder that even the most troubled places can find redemption and create a brighter future. It's a city that will stay with me long after I've left, not just as a memory, but as a profound source of hope.
