Finding Our Way to Paradise
Navigating to Lost Lake Campground was surprisingly straightforward. Our GPS led us right to the entrance using the address listed on the official website. The last few miles are on well-maintained forest service roads, accessible by any standard vehicle. Keep an eye out for the prominent Lost Lake Resort signs; they're hard to miss! A helpful landmark: once you turn off Highway 26, you'll cross a small bridge before the final stretch to the campground. Definitely download offline maps as cell service becomes spotty closer to the lake.
Setting Up Camp: Our Home Away From Home
We reserved campsite #32 well in advance through VistaLocation.com (highly recommended, especially during peak season!). It was a fantastic spot – spacious, relatively level, and offering a good mix of sun and shade. The kids immediately started exploring while we set up our tent. The ground was a bit rocky in places, so sturdy tent stakes are a must. We brought extra-long stakes just in case, and they came in handy. Having a picnic table and a fire ring already in place made setting up our cooking area a breeze.
Campground Rules and Family-Friendly Vibe
The campground rules were clearly posted and easy to follow. Quiet hours were strictly enforced from 10 pm to 7 am, which was much appreciated. The overall vibe was relaxed and family-friendly. We felt completely safe letting the kids roam around the campground (within sight, of course!). There were plenty of other families with young children, creating a sense of community. We even joined a few families for a campfire sing-along one evening! It really felt like the Best Oregon Campgrounds for Families.
Bathroom and Shower Facilities: The Nitty-Gritty
Let's be honest – bathroom facilities can make or break a camping trip! At Lost Lake Campground, the restrooms were generally clean and well-maintained, especially considering the high volume of visitors. Flush toilets were a major plus! There were several vault toilets available, too. There are coin-operated showers available at the nearby resort. We opted to use the showers at the resort because we didn't want to wait for the lines to clear in the Campground, and they were clean and provided plenty of hot water for all of us. Don't forget to bring your own towels and shower shoes!
Activities Galore: Lost Lake Adventures with Kids
Lost Lake offers a fantastic array of activities for families with young children. We packed our days with hiking, swimming, and kayaking.
Hiking: The 1-mile trail around Lost Lake was perfect for our little hikers. It’s mostly flat and offers stunning views of the lake and Mount Hood. The kids loved spotting wildlife along the way – we saw squirrels, chipmunks, and even a few deer! We also hiked a portion of the more challenging trail up to a viewpoint overlooking the lake. We didn't complete the whole trail with the kids, but it provided a great opportunity for some breathtaking photos. Remember to pack plenty of water and snacks, especially when Lost Lake Hiking with Kids.
Swimming: The designated swimming area near the day-use area was ideal for the kids. The water was refreshing (a bit chilly, but invigorating!), and there's a sandy beach perfect for building sandcastles. We brought our inflatable rafts, and the kids spent hours splashing and playing in the water. Remember to bring water shoes to protect little feet from the rocky bottom. Is Lost Lake safe for swimming with kids? Yes! There's a designated swimming area where we felt completely safe.
Kayaking: Renting kayaks from the Lost Lake Resort was a breeze. The kids absolutely loved paddling along the shoreline, exploring hidden coves, and spotting wildlife from the water. We rented a double kayak so we could take turns paddling with each child. It's a great way to see the lake from a different perspective and get some exercise at the same time! Lost Lake Kayaking Family memories made!

Beyond Lost Lake itself, we considered visiting Clear Lake and Tamolich Falls (also known as Blue Pool), which are located about an hour away. However, with all the activities Lost Lake had to offer, we decided to save those for another trip. Family activities near Lost Lake Oregon are abundant!
Kid-Friendly Highlights: Making Memories That Last
Lost Lake Campground is truly a haven for families with young children. The absence of cars whizzing through the campground was a big plus for safety. The kids enjoyed exploring the natural playground, climbing on fallen logs, and building forts in the woods. While there isn’t a designated playground, the entire area felt like one! The resort offered paddle boat and kayak rentals which was perfect for the whole family to use. There was a small convenience store where you could get ice cream as well.

Minor Challenges
While our trip was overwhelmingly positive, there were a few minor challenges worth mentioning. The campground can get crowded, especially on weekends. Reserving your campsite well in advance is essential. Also, the mosquitoes can be quite persistent, especially in the evenings. Be sure to pack plenty of insect repellent. Lost Lake campground Oregon safe for kids? Absolutely, but bug spray is your best friend!
