Glamping with a View: An Eco-Conscious Escape to...
Big Sur, California. The name alone conjures images of dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and an untamed wilderness. For Daniel, a marine biologist researching kelp forests, and myself, Maya, a landscape architect specializing in sustainable design, it's a place of constant inspiration and renewal. We recently spent three nights glamping at Kirk Creek Campground (36.0715° N, 121.5582° W) in our own canvas bell tent, seeking a unique experience that aligned with our eco-conscious values. Our stay offered breathtaking views, immersion in nature, and a commitment to preserving this incredible landscape, although a few unexpected challenges popped up along the way.
Arrival and Bell Tent Setup at Kirk Creek
Finding Kirk Creek Campground was a breeze. Highway 1 offers stunning views all the way, and the campground is well-marked. We arrived mid-afternoon, checked in with the friendly ranger, and located our designated spot. Setting up our canvas bell tent proved relatively easy. The ground was mostly level, requiring only minor adjustments. We were fortunate to snag a site with an incredible ocean view. The proximity to other campers was reasonable, allowing for a sense of community without sacrificing privacy. We felt like we were close enough to wave hello but far enough away to not hear other campers conversations.

Navigating Campground Rules and Regulations
Kirk Creek's campground rules were clearly posted and diligently enforced. We especially appreciated the emphasis on quiet hours after 10 PM, ensuring a peaceful night's sleep for everyone. Campfire regulations were strict, requiring the use of established fire rings and prohibiting wood gathering within the park. The pet policy was also well-defined, requiring dogs to be leashed and attended to at all times. We saw rangers actively patrolling to ensure compliance, which created a respectful and enjoyable environment for all campers – humans and canines alike.
Bathroom and Showering Facilities: A Mixed Review
The bathroom and showering facilities at Kirk Creek were functional but could use some improvements. While the restrooms were cleaned regularly, they often ran low on supplies like paper towels and soap. The showers were coin-operated and offered lukewarm water, making for a rather brief experience. We noticed some efforts toward water conservation, such as low-flow faucets, but there was room for improvement in this area.
Sustainability Features: A Work in Progress
Kirk Creek demonstrates a commitment to sustainability, but there's certainly room for growth. Recycling bins were readily available, but composting options were limited. We were pleased to see dark sky initiatives in place, encouraging campers to minimize light pollution. However, we felt that clearer signage and more educational resources could enhance the effectiveness of these features. We hope the California Parks system can continue to improve the campgrounds impact on the local environment.
Big Sur Adventures: Kayaking, Hiking, and Beach Cleanups
Big Sur is an adventurer’s paradise! Our trip was filled with activities that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the area.
Kayaking the Sea Caves
We embarked on a guided kayak tour with Adventures by Sea, a local tour operator known for their commitment to responsible tourism. The tour took us along the coastline, exploring hidden sea caves and learning about the unique geology of the area. The skill level required was moderate; even beginners could manage with a bit of instruction. We encountered an abundance of marine life, including playful sea otters, harbor seals basking in the sun, and vibrant starfish clinging to the rocks. It was an amazing experience and a highlight of our trip!
Hiking the Ewoldsen Trail
The Ewoldsen Trail offered a challenging yet rewarding hike through diverse microclimates. We marveled at the towering redwoods, lush ferns, and delicate wildflowers. Daniel, with his marine biology background, pointed out the unique adaptations of plants thriving in the coastal fog belt. The trail was steep in sections, so we took our time and wore sturdy hiking boots. We also carried plenty of water and snacks, and made sure to let someone know our hiking plans. Safety first!
Volunteering with the Surfrider Foundation
We learned about a beach cleanup initiative organized by the Surfrider Foundation through a flyer posted at the campground. We eagerly joined in, spending a few hours removing plastic debris and other litter from the shoreline. It was incredibly rewarding to contribute to the preservation of this beautiful beach, and it reinforced our commitment to responsible travel. It made us feel great to know we did what we could to help!
Sustainable Seafood Tacos: A Culinary Delight
Daniel's sustainable seafood tacos were a true highlight of our camp cooking experience. He prepared them using locally sourced, verified sustainable rock cod, shredded cabbage, avocado crema (avocado, lime juice, cilantro, locally sourced Greek yogurt), and fire-roasted salsa, all served on corn tortillas. We cooked on our portable propane stove, minimizing our impact on the environment.

Goal Zero Yeti 500X: A Power Struggle
We brought our Goal Zero Yeti 500X portable power station, hoping it would keep our portable refrigerator cool overnight. Unfortunately, it didn't hold as much power as we expected given its rating, and the refrigerator struggled to maintain a consistent temperature. This was a significant drawback, as it limited our ability to store perishable food safely. While the Goal Zero Yeti 500X is a decent product, we wouldn't recommend it for similar glamping trips requiring consistent refrigeration. We'd suggest exploring alternatives with higher capacity and more efficient power output, or opting for a cooler with better insulation.
Challenges of Remote Glamping in Big Sur
Remote glamping in Big Sur presents a few challenges. Cell service was extremely limited, requiring us to rely on pre-downloaded maps and communication plans. We also had a couple of encounters with wildlife, including curious raccoons and deer venturing into our campsite. To mitigate these challenges, we stored all food in airtight containers, kept a clean campsite, and carried bear spray as a precaution (though thankfully, we didn't need to use it!).

"Leave No Trace" at Kirk Creek Campground
We made every effort to adhere to "Leave No Trace" principles throughout our stay. We packed out all our trash, minimized campfire use, stayed on designated trails, and respected wildlife. Kirk Creek Campground facilitated these efforts by providing ample trash receptacles and clear signage promoting responsible camping practices. We observed other campers doing their part as well, creating a collective commitment to preserving the natural beauty of Big Sur.
Cost and Value: Is Kirk Creek Worth It?
Considering its location, amenities, and the overall experience, Kirk Creek Campground offers good value for eco-conscious travelers. While the bathroom facilities could be improved, the breathtaking views, access to incredible outdoor activities, and the sense of immersion in nature made it well worth the expense. The trade-offs between cost and value are particularly favorable for those who prioritize unique experiences and responsible travel. You should book well in advance as the popularity makes this a difficult location to reserve a campsite!
Reflections on Preservation: Balancing Beauty and Responsibility
Our glamping trip to Kirk Creek Campground served as a powerful reminder of the importance of balancing enjoyment with preservation. We can minimize our impact by choosing sustainable gear, supporting local businesses committed to environmental responsibility, and actively participating in conservation efforts. Every small action, from properly disposing of waste to respecting wildlife, contributes to the long-term health of this incredible ecosystem.
