Glamping Under the Texas Stars: A Review of Luxu...

5 min read

Garner State Park, a Texas Hill Country gem, has always been on our list for a weekend getaway. When we discovered Vistalocation offered glamping at Garner State Park, specifically in luxury safari tents, Liam, ever the planner, booked it immediately. I, Noah, the more…flexible one, just packed a bag and trusted his meticulous nature would lead us to a good time. Little did we know, our glamping adventure in Tent #2, affectionately nicknamed "The Leopard," would be a mix of luxurious comfort, unexpected mishaps, and unforgettable moments under the Texas stars.

Our adventure began, as most do, with a drive. The entrance to Garner State Park was clearly marked, a welcome sight. But after that, locating the "Luxury Safari Tents" proved to be a mini-quest. We drove past the Rio Frio River entrance, Liam's brow furrowing with each missed turn. Finally, we had to ask a park employee who pointed us toward a less-traveled gravel road. "Just keep goin'," she said with a knowing smile. "You'll see 'em."

First Impressions: "Glamping" or "Learning"?

Arriving at the glamping area, Liam was thrilled the tent was ready. For him, though, "ready" meant "ready to be learned." While I, Noah, was immediately searching for the Wi-Fi signal (unsuccessfully, I might add – it was practically non-existent), Liam was poring over the instructions for the propane fireplace inside the tent. "Safety first, Noah!" he declared. Of course, his first attempt to light the thing resulted in a rather loud beep from the carbon monoxide detector. Romantic, right?

Campground Rules and a Close Call

The campground rules were clear: campfires were only allowed in designated fire rings to prevent wildfires. Later that evening, in an attempt to create a romantic ambiance, Liam lit a citronella candle outside the fire ring to keep the mosquitoes at bay. A tiny flame flickered a little too brightly on some dry grass. Panic ensued! He smothered it quickly, but we spent the rest of the evening half-expecting a park ranger to arrive with a hefty fine. Let's just say, we stuck to the designated fire ring after that.

Upscale Bathroom Facilities: A Midnight Trek

One of the touted features of the glamping experience was the upscale, shared bathroom facilities. And they were nice. A well-lit pathway led to the building, which boasted rainfall showerheads and provided luxury toiletries, including locally made lavender soap. The walk was short, but at 3 AM, when Liam had to answer nature's call, the slightly longer than expected distance with his toiletries caddy in hand wasn't his favorite part of the stay.

Showering in Style (and Sharing)

The shower itself was fantastic. Great water pressure, ample hot water – a welcome change from some camping experiences we've had. However, be warned: it is a shared facility. Timing is key, especially during peak hours. On Saturday morning, I may or may not have hogged the hot water, leaving Liam with a decidedly lukewarm shower. Sorry, babe!

Daytime Adventures: River and Ridge

No trip to Garner State Park is complete without a float down the Frio River. We rented tubes from Frio River Outfitters just outside the park entrance [https://friorecreation.com/]. The current was surprisingly strong, and I nearly lost my sunglasses in the rapids. Liam, ever the cautious one, navigated the river with the grace of a seasoned explorer (while I mostly just screamed and laughed).

Sunday was "hiking day," or at least, that's what we planned. We attempted the Old Baldy trail. Key word: attempted. It was strenuous. We only made it about halfway up before we decided to call it quits. Part of the problem? Our footwear. Liam, in his flip-flops, was a disaster waiting to happen. And my brand new white sneakers were now covered in a thick layer of red dirt. Rookie mistake. Remember to pack appropriate hiking shoes for the best Garner State Park weekend trip!

Final Verdict: Glamping Under the Texas Stars

Overall, we give the Luxury Safari Tents at Garner State Park a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Here's the breakdown:

  • Luxury: 4.5/5 - The tent was beautifully appointed and comfortable, with a few minor hiccups.
  • Nature: 5/5 - You can't beat the location. The Texas Hill Country scenery is breathtaking.
  • Value: 3.5/5 - It's definitely a splurge, but worth it for the unique experience.

In conclusion, our glamping experience at Garner State Park was a memorable mix of luxury and nature, seasoned with a few comedic mishaps. We highly recommend it for those seeking a comfortable and stylish outdoor experience. Just remember to pack appropriate hiking shoes, bring your own portable Wi-Fi hotspot, and maybe practice lighting propane fireplaces before you go.
