Finding Myself in the Sands of Namibia: A Journey of Healing
Namibia. The name alone conjures images of vast, untouched landscapes, endless skies, and a profound sense of solitude. For me, Sarah Jenkins, a wildlife photographer nursing a broken heart, it became more than just a destination; it became a sanctuary. Leaving behind the shattered pieces of my relationship, I embarked on a 5-day journey through this extraordinary country, seeking solace in its raw beauty and finding unexpected healing in its ancient wisdom. This is my story, a letter from Namibia to you, in the hopes that it might inspire you to seek your own wild heart again.
Day 1: Arrival in Windhoek & Culinary Immersion – A Taste of Hope
Stepping off the plane at Hosea Kutako International Airport, the dry African air filled my lungs, a stark contrast to the stale air of my grief-stricken apartment. I picked up my trusty 4x4, my chariot for this adventure, and drove towards Windhoek, the capital city. The Olive Exclusive Boutique Hotel was a welcome oasis of calm, a perfect base for my first foray into Namibian culture.
That afternoon, I ventured into the heart of Windhoek, drawn by the intoxicating aroma of grilled meat. I found myself at Mama Sofia's street food stall, a vibrant hub of activity. The star of the show was Kapana, smoky, grilled beef seasoned with local spices.
The first bite was tentative. The smell of the kapana brought back memories of campfires with my ex, a sharp pang of longing. But then, something shifted. This wasn't the comforting, familiar smell of the past; it was something new, something infused with the promise of the future. It smelled…hopeful. Experiencing new flavors is part of what makes travel so fulfilling, and diving into Namibian cuisine was an excellent way to begin my Namibia Healing Retreat.
Day 2: Sossusvlei Sunrise & Desert Wisdom – Lessons in Resilience
The next day demanded an early start. Before dawn, I found myself bundled up, anticipation bubbling in my chest, ready for a hot air balloon ride over Sossusvlei. As the sun began to paint the sky in hues of orange and pink, the balloon gently lifted us above the ancient landscape. Below, the towering dunes of Sossusvlei stretched out in silent majesty.
It was breathtaking. The vastness, the silence, the sheer scale of the desert was overwhelming. I felt incredibly small, yet strangely connected to something much larger than myself. It was as if the desert itself was an ancient, silent teacher, its dunes whispering secrets of resilience and adaptation.

Later that morning, I found myself captivated by Dune 45, its perfect crescent shape a photographer's dream. The play of light and shadow was mesmerizing, constantly shifting and changing. I spent hours photographing it, each image revealing a new facet of its beauty. It struck me that the landscape was a metaphor for my own inner landscape – vast, seemingly empty, but full of hidden beauty waiting to be discovered. This was a key moment in my Namibia self-discovery travel.
Day 3: Damaraland Elephants & San Wisdom – The Interconnectedness of All Things
Leaving the dunes behind, I embarked on a long drive to Damaraland, a rugged and remote region known for its desert-adapted elephants. The landscape transformed, from towering dunes to rocky outcrops and vast plains. It was a stark reminder of Namibia's incredible diversity.
In Damaraland, I had the privilege of joining //Oaseb, a local San guide, on a tracking expedition. The San people are the original inhabitants of Southern Africa, and their knowledge of the land and its creatures is unparalleled.
Tracking desert elephants is not for the faint of heart. It requires patience, perseverance, and a deep respect for the animals. //Oaseb led us through seemingly barren terrain, pointing out subtle clues that I would have completely missed – a broken twig, a faint footprint in the sand.
As we walked, //Oaseb shared stories of his people, tales of the interconnectedness of all living things. He spoke of the importance of respecting nature, of living in harmony with the environment. His words resonated deeply within me. The elephants, these magnificent creatures who had adapted to survive in such a harsh environment, became symbols of strength and resilience, mirroring my own journey.
It's important to note that ethical and sustainable tourism is crucial in Damaraland. Organizations like the N/a’an ku sê Foundation https://naankuse.com/ are doing incredible work to protect wildlife and support local communities. Consider supporting them on your Namibia Wildlife Photography tour. This experience made me evaluate whether the Namibia Desert Elephant Tracking Tour I was on was responsible and ethical.
Day 4: NamibRand Stargazing & Cosmic Perspective – Finding My Place in the Universe
From Damaraland, I journeyed to the NamibRand Nature Reserve, one of the darkest places on Earth. The promise of a night sky unpolluted by artificial light filled me with anticipation. That evening, I met with an astronomer who specialized in indigenous constellations.
The NamibRand sky was unlike anything I had ever seen. The Milky Way stretched across the horizon like a river of light, and countless stars twinkled with incredible clarity. The astronomer shared ancient stories of the stars, tales passed down through generations of local people.
Looking up at the vastness of the universe, I felt a profound shift in perspective. My personal heartbreak, which had seemed so all-consuming, suddenly felt insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The universe was so vast, so old, so full of wonder. It was a humbling and liberating experience. This NamibRand Stargazing Experience gave me much needed space to breathe.
Day 5: Kolmanskop Ghosts & Coastal Reflection – Letting Go of the Past
My final day began with a drive to Kolmanskop, the abandoned diamond mining town. This ghost town, slowly being reclaimed by the desert, is a photographer's paradise. I spent hours wandering through the decaying buildings, capturing the surreal beauty of the sand-filled rooms.

These "ghosts" of the past represented the impermanence of things, the fleeting nature of life. They served as a powerful reminder of the importance of letting go, of not clinging to things that are no longer serving us.
From Kolmanskop, I briefly touched the edge of the Skeleton Coast. It was a fleeting glimpse, but enough to leave a lasting impression. The coastline, a graveyard of ships, a reminder of nature's power.
On my way back to Windhoek, I stopped at a roadside stand near Solitaire and bought some biltong, a traditional dried meat snack. This Biltong Solitaire Namibia stop helped me buy some fuel. Savory and laced with coriander, it was the perfect road trip fuel.
Before heading to the airport, I made a point of visiting the Penduka project https://penduka.com/, an organization that empowers women through craftwork. It was a small gesture, but I wanted to leave a piece of my heart in Namibia, and to support the incredible work they are doing.
As I boarded the plane, I felt a sense of peace and renewal. Namibia had given me so much – breathtaking landscapes, profound encounters, and the space to heal. I left a piece of my heartbreak in the sands of the Namib, and returned with a wilder, stronger, and more hopeful heart. If you're looking for a Transformative Travel Namibia adventure, I highly recommend it. This Namibia Solo Female Travel experience showed me how to love myself again.
