Douthat State Park: A Birdwatcher's Paradise (and George's Kayaking Adventure!)

Hello fellow nature lovers! Eleanor here, reporting back from a recent trip to the absolutely stunning Douthat State Park in Virginia. Fresh off my retirement and armed with my trusty binoculars, my (sometimes skeptical) husband George, our whirlwind of a Jack Russell terrier Sparky, and I decided to trade in the GPS for an old-fashioned paper map. This, as you might imagine, led to a slight detour involving a very scenic, but ultimately incorrect, route down a winding country road. Still, the sun dappling through the vibrant fall foliage was breathtaking! It was the perfect start to our Douthat State Park camping adventure.

Campsite Chronicles: Whispering Pines Woes

After finally arriving (thanks to a helpful local and their surprisingly accurate directions), we made our way to Campsite #32 in the Whispering Pines Campground. Now, "whispering" it was, but "level" it was not! George, bless his heart, spent a good half-hour kicking rocks around, trying to find the perfect spot for our tent. The campsite itself was a decent size, though pretty close to our neighbors, but we did have a magnificent towering oak providing plenty of shade. These are the things you remember with Virginia State Park camping.

Sparky's Squirrel Saga (and Park Rules)

Douthat State Park has a strict leash policy, which Sparky, our energetic Jack Russell, viewed as a personal affront. He's convinced his life's mission is to chase every squirrel into the next county! Keeping him on that leash was a constant battle. "Sparky, NO!" became my mantra. He just couldn't resist the taunting squirrels. Are dogs allowed at Douthat State Park campgrounds? Yes, but they must be leashed! A blurry photo of a Jack Russell Terrier, mid-leap with his leash extended, focused on a squirrel just out of reach.

Bathroom Musings

Let's talk about the bathhouses. They were… functional. Clean, which is always a plus, but definitely showing their age. The showers were an adventure in themselves. Finding the perfect temperature was nearly impossible – either lukewarm or scalding! I think I mastered the art of the quick rinse, though. These are honest Douthat State Park Reviews.

Birdwatching Bliss on Stony Run Trail

Now, for the main event: birdwatching! We spent a glorious morning hiking along the Stony Run Trail. It was a bit challenging in sections, but the rewards were well worth it. We saw a magnificent pileated woodpecker drumming on a dead tree – George almost dropped his binoculars! And the scarlet tanagers! Absolutely stunning. I pulled out my vintage binoculars and well-worn field guide for a closer look. We even spotted a few cardinals, robins and blue jays. A close-up of a page from a well-worn bird field guide, circled around a scarlet tanager. What birds can I see at Douthat State Park? I highly recommend taking a walk along the Stony Run Trail for the best sightings.

Kayaking Capers on Douthat Lake

The next day, we decided to take to the water and explore Douthat Lake by kayak. The lake is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by the rolling Allegheny Mountains. It was so peaceful gliding across the water. Until… George nearly tipped his kayak while trying to photograph a bald eagle! I swear I thought he was going for a swim! Luckily, he managed to regain his balance, and we both had a good laugh. Douthat State Park Kayaking is a must-do. Rentals are available at the park, with prices varying depending on the type of kayak and rental duration.

The Espresso Maker Saga

Now, for my "luxury" item: my portable espresso maker. George initially rolled his eyes. "Another gadget, El?" But, oh, the joy of a perfectly brewed cappuccino in the great outdoors! Every morning, I'd brew a batch at our campsite, the smell of coffee mingling with the crisp mountain air. Even George had to admit, it was pretty darn good. He became quite the cappuccino connoisseur by the end of the trip!
