Chasing Light on Skye: A Solo Photographer's Jou...

6 min read

After a year that felt like navigating a perpetual storm, I craved solace and inspiration. The Isle of Skye, with its rugged landscapes and ethereal light, beckoned as the perfect sanctuary. As a 42-year-old solo female nature photographer, I was ready to embark on a 7-day adventure, chasing the elusive light that dances across this dramatic corner of the Scottish Highlands. My goal? To capture the soul of Skye through my lens, and in doing so, rediscover my own. I wanted to capture the best Isle of Skye photo spots.

Day 1: Arrival in Portree & Coastal Views

My journey began at Inverness Airport, where I picked up my trusty steed for the week: a dark green Subaru Forester, perfect for navigating the winding Highland roads. The drive to Portree was an immersion into Scotland's raw beauty – rolling hills, shimmering lochs, and the promise of mountains on the horizon. As I approached Portree, the iconic image of the colorful harbor materialized, nestled beneath the watchful gaze of the Cuillin mountains. I checked into the Cuillin Hills Hotel, a cozy B&B that promised stunning views and a warm welcome. The sense of remoteness was palpable, yet exhilarating. That evening, I ventured to the Aros Centre viewpoint, camera in hand. The sunset painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, casting a magical glow over the harbor. It was a perfect start to my photography trip Isle of Skye.

Day 2: The Old Man of Storr & Lealt Falls

An early start was essential to tackle the Old Man of Storr. The hike was challenging, a steep ascent over rocky terrain, but the reward was beyond measure. As I climbed higher, the panoramic views unfolded, revealing the breathtaking scale of the landscape. The dramatic lighting, with sunlight piercing through the clouds, accentuated the jagged peaks and rolling hills. It was a landscape photographer's dream. After descending, I treated myself to a hearty lentil soup at the Old School Restaurant – a welcome warmth against the brisk Skye air. In the afternoon, I visited Lealt Falls, where I experimented with long-exposure shots to capture the cascading water in a silky blur. The sound of the falls, combined with the vastness of the scenery, was incredibly calming.

Day 3: Quiraing's Magic

The Quiraing is unlike anything I've ever seen. It's a geological wonderland, a collection of bizarre rock formations that seem to belong to another planet. The hike through this otherworldly landscape was an adventure in itself, navigating past landmarks like the Needle and the Prison. The light was constantly changing, creating a mesmerizing dance of shadows and highlights. At times, I felt dwarfed by the sheer scale of the surroundings. Sheep roamed freely on the hillsides, adding a touch of pastoral charm to the dramatic scenery. In the evening, I enjoyed a delicious seafood dinner at the Sea Breezer in Portree, savoring the fresh flavors of the sea.

Day 4: Dunvegan Castle & Neist Point

A journey to Skye isn't complete without a visit to Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral home of the Clan MacLeod. The castle is steeped in history, and I particularly enjoyed the boat trip to see the resident seal colony. I captured photos of the castle's imposing architecture and the surrounding gardens, imagining the generations who had walked these grounds before me. In the afternoon, I drove to Neist Point, the westernmost point of Skye. The dramatic coastal cliffs and the iconic lighthouse provided a stunning backdrop for sunset photography. As the golden hour approached, the sky erupted in a blaze of color, casting a warm glow over the rugged coastline. This is an essential location for Isle of Skye photography.

Day 5: Fairy Pools & Glen Brittle

The Fairy Pools, near Glen Brittle, are a must-see for any photographer visiting Skye. The hike to the pools was challenging, but the reward was well worth the effort. The water was crystal clear, and despite the cold, I braved a dip for some unique underwater shots and landscape reflections. The surrounding mountain scenery added to the magical atmosphere. I enjoyed a packed picnic lunch of oatcakes, cheese, and local berries by the pools, soaking in the serenity of the surroundings.

Day 6: Talisker Distillery & Carbost

A visit to the Talisker Distillery in Carbost was a welcome change of pace. I indulged in a tasting experience, learning about the history and production of this famous single malt whisky. The peaty aroma filled the air, a perfect complement to the rugged coastal setting. For lunch, I headed to The Old Inn in Carbost and savored a bowl of Cullen Skink – a traditional Scottish soup made with smoked haddock, potatoes, and onions. In the afternoon, I spent time photographing Loch Harport, capturing its tranquil beauty.

Day 7: Loch Coruisk Kayaking & Departure

My final day on Skye began with an early morning kayaking trip on Loch Coruisk. Paddling across the calm water, surrounded by the towering Cuillin mountains, was an unforgettable experience. The reflections of the mountains in the loch were simply breathtaking. It was a moment of pure peace and tranquility, a perfect way to end my solo female travel Isle of Skye adventure. Before heading to Inverness Airport for my departure, I enjoyed a final meal at Kinloch Lodge, indulging in their delicious Haggis Bonbons. Skye had worked its magic, leaving me feeling refreshed, inspired, and deeply connected to nature.
