Cayo Costa Camping: A Birder's and Wildlife Photographer's Paradise

Cayo Costa State Park. Just the name conjures images of pristine beaches, abundant wildlife, and tranquil isolation. But is it the right destination for the budget-conscious, birding and photography enthusiast? As a retired biology professor (Miguel), accompanied by my wildlife photographer wife (Elena) and marine biologist daughter (Sofia), we recently embarked on a hammock camping adventure to Cayo Costa to find out. We’ll give you the inside scoop on everything from the ferry ride to the relentless mosquitoes, so you can determine if this barrier island is your ideal escape. Getting to Cayo Costa: Ferry Tales and Island Dreams

One of the defining characteristics of Cayo Costa is its inaccessibility. There are no bridges to this island paradise; you’re reliant on boats. Most visitors opt for the ferry service from Pine Island, specifically from the quaint town of Bokeelia. The ferry schedule varies seasonally, so be sure to check the latest times and make reservations well in advance, especially during peak season. Hammock Camping: Finding Your Perfect Spot

Upon arrival, we made our way to the campground, a short walk from the ferry dock. Our mission: find the perfect spot to hang our Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series. We are all in our late 50s and early 60s and the Hennessy Hammocks are our camping method of choice, being lightweight and easy on our aging backs. However, this is where the real adventure began. Campground selection is key when hammock camping.

Finding suitable trees, spaced approximately 12-15 feet apart, proved more challenging than anticipated. Many potential spots were either too close to other campers or had unsuitable trees. Palm trees, while plentiful, present their own unique challenges. We eventually found a secluded area near the edge of the campground and began the setup.

One less-than-welcome discovery: palmetto bugs (large cockroaches) scurrying up the palm trunks. While harmless, they certainly weren't ideal roommates. We took care to elevate our hammocks and keep our food secured to minimize any unwanted encounters.

Leave No Trace: Campground Rules

Cayo Costa State Park strictly enforces a "leave no trace" policy. This means everything you bring in must be carried out, including all trash, food waste, and packaging. There are no trash receptacles in the campground itself, so come prepared with sturdy trash bags. This is a crucial part of preserving the island's pristine environment. Flash photography is strictly prohibited near nesting sea turtles on the beach at night. Please respect this rule, as it protects these endangered creatures.

Bathroom Facilities and Staying Clean

The bathroom facilities are composting toilets, located a 5-minute walk from our campsite. While eco-friendly, they're not exactly luxurious. Showers are completely nonexistent. Our solution for staying clean involved biodegradable wet wipes, specifically Sea to Summit Wilderness Wipes, and dry shampoo. These essentials helped us feel relatively fresh despite the lack of traditional bathing options.

Shorebird Identification and Bird Photography Florida Gulf Coast

Cayo Costa is a birding paradise. We spent hours identifying shorebirds along the beach, using the Cornell Lab's Merlin Bird ID app to decipher unfamiliar calls. We spotted snowy plovers with their distinctive black legs, reddish egrets displaying their active foraging behavior, and numerous other species. Elena, armed with her telephoto lens, was in her element. If you're looking to photograph birds in Florida's Gulf Coast on a budget, Cayo Costa is a top pick!

One of the best spots for photographing brown pelicans diving for fish is along the southern tip of the island, near the tidal pools. Elena had great success using a shutter speed of 1/2000, an aperture of f/5.6, and an ISO of 400 to capture the action. Remember that the best time to visit Cayo Costa for birding is typically during the spring and fall migration seasons.

Shelling Tips and Beach Treasures

Shelling is another popular activity on Cayo Costa. We found several conch shells (legal to take if unoccupied) and beautiful lightning whelk shells. Sand dollars were also abundant, but remember that it is illegal to collect them if they are still alive. Always check before you pocket your treasure. Respect the environment and leave any shells with living organisms undisturbed. Cayo Costa shelling tips: head out at low tide, and search along the wrack line (the line of seaweed and debris left by the high tide).

Mosquitoes and Heat: The Unavoidable Challenges of Cayo Costa Camping

Ah, the mosquitoes and no-see-ums. These tiny tormentors were relentless. We quickly learned that frequent application of DEET repellent, specifically Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellent, was essential for survival. Mosquito nets were also indispensable, especially at dawn and dusk. Despite our best efforts, we still endured countless bites. Be prepared for Cayo Costa camping with mosquitoes and take precautions!

The Florida heat also posed a significant challenge. We made sure to drink at least 3 liters of water per day and sought shade during the hottest part of the afternoon (1-4 PM). Investing in lightweight, breathable clothing is also highly recommended.

Limited Social Interaction and Sea Turtle Protection

As a remote campground, Cayo Costa offers limited social interaction. We did, however, have a brief conversation with a park ranger named Ranger Johnson near the beach. He explained the ongoing efforts to protect sea turtle nests from predators like raccoons. These efforts are crucial for the survival of these endangered species.

Cayo Costa State Park is undoubtedly a beautiful and unique destination. However, it's not for the faint of heart. The remote location, challenging camping conditions, and relentless bugs require preparation and a sense of adventure.
