Back to My Roots: Rediscovering Paradise in Rarotonga
Kia Orana, everyone! Auntie Rina here, reporting live (well, almost live!) from the heart of the Cook Islands – Rarotonga, my beautiful home. After two long decades away, chasing dreams and opportunities in the big wide world, I’ve finally made it back. Stepping off the plane at Rarotonga International Airport at dusk was like stepping into a warm embrace. The air, thick with the intoxicating scent of frangipani, hummed with the gentle strumming of ukuleles. As I gazed upon the volcanic peaks silhouetted against a fiery orange sunset, a wave of emotion washed over me. I was home. And there, waiting with open arms and leis woven with fragrant flowers, were my family. Ah, the tears! Happy tears, of course. Now, let me take you on my journey of rediscovery, as I fall in love all over again with the magic of Rarotonga.
Relearning the Rhythm of Island Life: Activities and Culture
Living abroad for so long, you tend to forget the simple joys, the traditions that bind us together. So, my first few weeks back were dedicated to immersing myself in Cook Islands culture. And let me tell you, it was an experience!
First up, the 'Ura' dance workshop. Now, I wouldn't say I have two left feet, but… well, let's just say I provided the other participants with some good laughs! The costumes were breathtaking – vibrant colours, swirling fabrics, and intricately designed 'Tapa' cloth telling stories as old as time. The rhythmic drumming, though, was what truly got to me. It’s in our blood, that beat. It calls to the soul.
Next, I attempted to master the ukulele. Oh, the ukulele! I envisioned myself serenading the grandchildren with sweet melodies. Reality? More like torturing the poor instructor with off-key strumming. He was a saint, though, that man. Patient, kind, and always encouraging, even when I accidentally plucked a string so hard it nearly snapped. I might not be ready for the stage just yet, but I’m determined to learn! You can find places offering lessons everywhere. It's a great way to soak in the culture and enjoy your vacation! (Cook Islands dance classes, Rarotonga ukulele lessons)
A visit to Pa Ariki's Takitumu Conservation Area was another highlight. This lush, green sanctuary is a treasure trove of native flora and fauna. Our local guide, a wise and gentle man named Tuaine, shared stories of the land and the importance of conservation. The air was alive with the calls of native birds, a symphony I hadn't heard in far too long. It was a powerful reminder of what we need to protect for future generations. (Rarotonga guided tours of Takitumu Conservation Area).
And of course, no trip to Rarotonga is complete without a lagoon cruise. The water is crystal-clear turquoise, so vibrant it almost doesn’t seem real. We snorkelled amongst giant clams, marvelled at the coral reefs teeming with life, and simply basked in the glorious sunshine. My skin still tingles with the memory of that perfect day. A truly unforgettable experience to consider for Rarotonga tours and activities.
A Feast for the Senses: Indulging in Cook Islands Cuisine
Oh, the food! How I’ve missed the taste of home. My first meal back had to be Ika Mata. Fresh raw fish marinated in lime juice and creamy coconut milk… simply divine! The tang of the lime, the richness of the coconut, the melt-in-your-mouth texture of the fish – it's a taste of paradise.

Rukau, taro leaves cooked in coconut cream, is another staple. The texture is unique, slightly earthy, and the coconut cream adds a wonderful richness. And then there's Poke… oh, Poke! A simple but heavenly combination of ripe bananas and pawpaw, swimming in sweet coconut cream. Forget dessert, give me Poke any day! Where to eat local food in Rarotonga? Anywhere! I encourage you to sample this cuisine in the Cook Islands food tour.
Painted by Nature: The Breathtaking Landscape
Rarotonga is a feast for the eyes. Imagine this: Volcanic peaks, cloaked in dense green jungle, rise majestically from the heart of the island. White sandy beaches, fringed with swaying palm trees, hug the coastline. And the turquoise lagoon, a shimmering expanse of water teeming with marine life, stretches out to the horizon. The coral reefs, just below the surface, are a kaleidoscope of colours. Every corner of this island is a postcard-perfect scene. You'll be sure to have the ultimate Cook Islands vacation.
A Homecoming to Remember: My Heart Belongs Here
My journey back to Rarotonga has been more than just a vacation; it's been a rediscovery of my roots, a reconnection with my family, and a reaffirmation of my love for this beautiful island. I've relearned the importance of our traditions, savoured the flavours of home, and been captivated by the breathtaking landscape. More importantly, I've been reminded of the warmth and hospitality of the Cook Islands people. We are a welcoming bunch, I tell you! This experience has given me a new appreciation for my culture, and for the importance of preserving our heritage.
