Assateague's Wild Beauty: Horses, Birds, and a Sky Full of Stars
For Ben and me, Leo, escaping the city for a dose of nature is essential. We're always on the lookout for places that offer a blend of tranquility, wildlife encounters, and, of course, breathtaking scenery. Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland delivered all that and more. Our late spring trip was nothing short of magical, a symphony of salty breezes, golden sunsets, and the quiet majesty of wild horses. The three-hour drive from Philadelphia flew by as we eagerly anticipated our first glimpse of this unique ecosystem. Booking our campsite, #23 at the Oceanside Campground, through Recreation.gov was surprisingly smooth and easy. As we arrived, the setting sun cast a warm glow on the swaying dune grasses, a welcome embrace after our journey. The distant roar of the ocean promised adventure, and we couldn't wait to explore.

Setting Up Camp: A Test of Patience (and Tools)
Setting up our trusty MSR Hubba Hubba NX tent is usually a breeze, but the soft, sandy soil of Assateague presented a comical challenge. Leo’s initial attempts to stake the tent were met with repeated failures as the stakes pulled free with the slightest breeze. "Seriously?" he exclaimed, throwing his hands up in mock frustration. Fortunately, Ben, ever the pragmatist, had a solution: their Orange Screw Ground Anchors. These things are lifesavers! With a few twists, they burrowed deep into the sand, providing a secure foundation. We highly recommend investing in these if you're planning to camp on the beach. Before setting up the tent, we made sure to lay down a footprint to protect the tent floor from abrasion, ensuring a longer lifespan for our gear. As the last rays of sunlight faded, we appreciated the warm orange glow emanating from within the tent, a cozy haven against the approaching darkness.
Respecting the Island: Park Rules and Minimal Impact
Assateague is a precious ecosystem, and respecting the park's regulations is paramount. Campfires are only permitted in designated fire rings and require a permit obtained from the ranger station. We opted for a simple camp stove instead, prioritizing the preservation of the natural environment. During our nighttime walks along the beach, we relied on our BioLite HeadLamp 200, using the red-light setting to minimize disturbance to nesting shorebirds like the Piping Plover. Seeing these vulnerable birds scurrying along the shoreline reinforced our commitment to responsible tourism. Packing out all our trash was non-negotiable. The pristine condition of the beach was a testament to the collective efforts of visitors, and we were determined to leave it just as we found it – untouched and beautiful.
Washing Up: Creative Solutions for Cleanliness
The rinse stations near the Oceanside Campground, while functional, left something to be desired. The water pressure was weak, and the temperature was, shall we say, invigoratingly cold! To combat this, we deployed our trusty Advanced Elements Summer Shower – a black solar shower bag that we filled with water and left to warm on the roof of our car during the day. This provided a much more thorough, private, and comfortable wash behind the tent. Of course, we made sure to use biodegradable soap, Dr. Bronner’s, to minimize our impact on the fragile ecosystem.
Activities: A Celebration of Nature's Wonders
Assateague Island offers a wealth of activities for nature lovers. Here are some highlights from our trip:
Birdwatching: A Symphony of Coastal Sounds
Waking up before dawn and witnessing the sunrise over the Atlantic was an experience in itself. But it was the birdlife that truly captivated us. Armed with Leo's Vortex Diamondback HD 8x42 binoculars and Ben’s Celestron Ultima 80 spotting scope on a tripod, we spent hours observing the diverse avian inhabitants of the island. Piping Plovers darted along the shoreline, their delicate movements a constant reminder of the fragility of life. The American Oystercatcher, with its distinctive orange beak, was a striking sight, while various types of gulls wheeled overhead, their cries echoing in the crisp morning air.
Stargazing: A Celestial Canvas
As night fell, we ventured onto the beach with our Celestron NexStar 6SE telescope. Using the SkyView Lite app on Ben's iPhone, we navigated the constellations and planets overhead. The experience was truly awe-inspiring. With minimal light pollution, the Milky Way stretched across the inky black sky like a river of diamonds. We excitedly pointed out Jupiter and Saturn, marveling at their distant beauty. It was a shared experience that deepened our connection to each other and to the universe.

Wild Horses: A Glimpse of Untamed Beauty
Observing the wild horses grazing peacefully in a nearby field at dusk was a truly unforgettable experience. We kept a respectful distance, using binoculars and a telephoto lens (a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens mounted on a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV camera) to capture their beauty. These magnificent creatures, with their shaggy manes, sturdy builds, and coats gleaming in the fading light, are a symbol of Assateague's untamed spirit. It's crucial to remember never to approach or feed the horses, as this can disrupt their natural behavior and even be harmful to their health.
Kayaking: Exploring the Bay's Serenity
A mid-day kayaking trip in Sinepuxent Bay, a short drive from the campsite, provided a different perspective of the island's beauty. We rented kayaks from Assateague Outfitters and spent a blissful afternoon paddling through the calm waters. We observed various types of waterfowl, such as mallards and teals, swimming in the shallows. The peacefulness of the bay was a welcome respite from the ocean's crashing waves, a tranquil world teeming with life.
Food: Fueling the Adventure
When it comes to camping, lightweight and easy-to-prepare meals are essential. We relied on Mountain House Beef Stroganoff and Backpacker's Pantry Pad Thai dehydrated backpacking meals for quick and satisfying dinners. Proper food storage is crucial in bear country, so we diligently used our Counter Assault Bear Keg Food Canister to prevent attracting wildlife and keep our campsite clean.
Best Time to Visit: Shoulder Season Charm
While Assateague is beautiful year-round, the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer the best of both worlds: fewer crowds, milder temperatures ideal for hiking and kayaking, and peak bird migration, making it a paradise for birdwatchers like us.
Overall Impression: A Must-Visit Destination
Assateague Island National Seashore is a truly special place, a sanctuary where the wild beauty of nature takes center stage. We wholeheartedly recommend it to other couples, especially those who appreciate nature, birdwatching, and stargazing. The experience of seeing wild horses roaming free on the beach is simply unparalleled. We give Assateague a 9.5/10, only marking it down slightly for the somewhat limited washing facilities. The incredible stargazing conditions and the magic of the wild horses more than make up for it. We can't wait to return!
