Assateague Island Camping: A Marine Biologist &...

6 min read

Celebrating our first wedding anniversary, David and I sought an escape that combined our passions: his for photography, mine for marine life. Assateague Island National Seashore, with its wild horses, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife, proved to be the perfect choice. As a marine biologist, I was eager to explore the coastal ecosystems, while David, a freelance photographer, dreamt of capturing the island's raw beauty. Our camping trip was a mix of adventure, relaxation, and a few unexpected challenges, making for an unforgettable anniversary. Read on for our honest review and tips for planning your own Assateague Island adventure!

Location & Setup: Finding Our Slice of Paradise in B Loop

Finding our campsite was surprisingly easy. Campground B Loop is conveniently located directly off Route 611 South; just turn left at the clearly marked sign. Check-in at the ranger station was quick and efficient, and we were soon directed to our assigned site, B22.

The site itself featured a 15ft x 20ft tent pad, just a short walk from the parking area. Setting up our Marmot Limestone 4P tent, however, presented our first challenge. The sandy soil made it difficult to get the tent stakes to hold. Thankfully, we came prepared with heavy-duty REI Co-op Sand Anchor Tent Stakes, which proved essential for securing our tent against the unpredictable coastal winds.

Rules & Regulations: Respecting the Island's Ecosystem

Assateague Island National Seashore enforces strict rules to protect its delicate ecosystem. The "pack it in, pack it out" policy is rigorously enforced, and campfires are strictly prohibited – only propane stoves are allowed. Quiet hours are observed from 10 PM to 6 AM, ensuring a peaceful night's sleep for everyone. Reservations are required and can be made up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov. Finally, it's vital never to leave food unattended, as it can attract wildlife, including the famous wild horses. Always secure your food properly!

Bathrooms & Showers: Basic Amenities with a Coastal Vibe

The bathhouse facilities in B Loop offered basic amenities: flush toilets and sinks with cold running water. Coin-operated showers are available for $0.50 for 3 minutes. While adequately maintained, the facilities were definitely showing their age. Lines for the showers can get long in the evenings, so plan accordingly.

Activities: Surfing, Birdwatching, Kayaking & Night Photography

Assateague Island is a playground for nature lovers. Here are some of the highlights from our anniversary trip:

Surfing: Catching Beginner-Friendly Waves

The south end of the island, near the lifeguard stand, offers beginner-friendly surfing conditions. We found consistent 2-3ft waves perfect for learning. If you're new to surfing, we highly recommend taking a lesson at the Assateague Surf Shop, located at 8225 Snug Harbor Rd, Chincoteague, VA 23336.

Birdwatching: A Birder's Paradise

As a marine biologist, I was thrilled by the incredible birdlife on Assateague. I spent hours spotting Snowy Egrets wading gracefully in the marshes and Piping Plovers scurrying along the beach. My Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 binoculars were invaluable for observing these beautiful creatures. Be sure to check the Assateague Island National Seashore website for recent bird sightings!

Kayaking: Exploring Sinepuxent Bay

We booked a guided kayak tour of Sinepuxent Bay through Assateague Explorer. To book this tour, visit AssateagueExplorer.com and select the 'Sunset Kayak Tour' at 6 PM on the date of your tour. We saw countless horseshoe crabs and various waterfowl during our paddle. The sunset over the bay was breathtaking.

Night Photography: Chasing the Milky Way

David was determined to capture the Milky Way over the beach. Using his Sony a7III camera with a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens, he experimented with settings: ISO 3200, f/2.8, 25-second exposure. The light pollution from Ocean City, Maryland, posed a challenge, but his Optolong L-Pro light pollution filter helped to minimize the glare and reveal the stars.

Food: Coastal Delights and Campground Cooking

No anniversary trip is complete without delicious food! We purchased fresh steamed blue crabs with Old Bay seasoning from Captain Bob's Seafood at 6506 Maddox Blvd, Chincoteague, VA 23336. We also grilled corn on the cob on our trusty Coleman propane grill.

Challenges: Battling Bugs and Breezes

Our biggest challenge was the intense mosquito and greenhead fly activity, particularly during dawn and dusk. We highly recommend using a DEET-based insect repellent (we used Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellent) and wearing long sleeves and pants during those times. High winds also buffeted our tent, requiring us to re-secure the tent stakes several times. Be prepared for unpredictable weather!

Gear: Essential Equipment for Comfort and Convenience

Here’s a rundown of some of our essential gear:

  • Marmot Limestone 4P tent: Spacious and reliable for sleeping.
  • Goal Zero Yeti 500X portable power station: Perfect for charging our phones and camera batteries.
  • Black Diamond Spot 400 headlamps: Indispensable for navigating the campground at night.

Social Media: Sharing Our Adventure

David (@AssateagueAdventures) flooded his Instagram with stunning photos of the wild horses, using the hashtags #AssateagueWildHorses, #Chincoteague, and #BeachCamping.

I (@CoastalLife) live-tweeted about my birdwatching experience, including photos and observations about Snowy Egrets and Piping Plovers, using the hashtags #BirdMigration, #CoastalEcology, and #AssateagueBirds.

Ambiance: A Symphony of Coastal Sounds and Scents

The sounds of the ocean waves crashing on the beach created a constant, soothing soundtrack. The cries of the seagulls overhead and the distant barks of the wild horses added to the island's unique charm. The air was filled with the smells of salt air, sunscreen, and the enticing aroma of grilling food.

  • HOOK: A close-up shot of a wild horse foal's eyelashes blinking in slow motion.
  • SCENE: A wide shot of the beach at sunset, filmed in cinematic 4K on a RED Komodo camera with a 24mm lens. The lighting is golden hour, casting long shadows and creating a warm, romantic mood. Camera movement is a slow, sweeping orbit around a small herd of horses grazing peacefully.
  • TWIST: Suddenly, the foal breaks away from its mother and sprints playfully towards the camera, kicking up sand and whinnying, and runs right past the camera lens. The moment of surprise is emphasized with a dramatic close-up of the foal's running hooves.

Conclusion: A Memorable Anniversary Getaway

Our camping trip to Assateague Island National Seashore was a truly unforgettable anniversary celebration. Despite the challenges of the bugs and the wind, the stunning natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and diverse activities made it all worthwhile.
