Finding My Slice of Paradise: Bayside Campground, Site B-27
The drive to Assateague was beautiful, the anticipation building with every mile. I had reserved Bayside Campground, site B-27, a walk-in site. Finding the turn for the Bayside Campground was easy, the sign was clear as day. The parking lot, however, was a bit trickier. It's situated quite a distance from the main entrance and, if you're not paying attention, you could easily miss it.
The real challenge began once I parked. Site B-27 was a decent walk from the parking lot – maybe a quarter of a mile. For someone with mild arthritis like me, lugging all my gear that distance was…interesting. I made several trips, breaking a sweat and questioning my sanity. But hey, that’s part of the adventure, right? I definitely suggest using a wagon for all your gear!

Park Rules: Respecting the Wild
Assateague has a few essential rules to keep campers and wildlife safe. Campfires are only allowed in designated fire rings, and restrictions are often in place depending on wind conditions. Always check at the ranger station upon arrival!
Then there are the ponies… adorable, yes, but also notorious food thieves. All food must be stored properly to protect it from those curious critters. I learned that the hard way; more on that later. Quiet hours are strictly enforced from 10 PM to 6 AM.
Campground Facilities: Roughing It (Slightly)
The Bayside Campground offers vault toilets. My campsite was a bit of a trek from the nearest one, which wasn't ideal, especially at night. The toilets themselves were…well, let's just say they were vault toilets. Not exactly sparkling clean, and definitely lacking in accessibility features. Hand sanitizer and wipes are an absolute must!
As for showers, they’re available, but you have to pay to use them. The logistics of using them alone as an older woman were a bit daunting. Carrying all my supplies, worrying about safety… It cost a few dollars for a limited amount of water, and the water pressure wasn't amazing, but it was worth it to feel clean after a day on the beach. Beachcombing is another fantastic way to spend time on Assateague. The rhythmic sound of the waves, the feel of the sand between my toes… it's incredibly calming. I was on the hunt for specific seashells like whelks and razor clams. Finding a perfect, unbroken shell is like discovering a little treasure.
Pony Paradise
Of course, no trip to Assateague is complete without seeing the wild ponies! They roam freely throughout the park. The best times to see them are early morning or late afternoon. To keep your food safe, always store it in a hard-sided container or hang it from a tree.
I spotted them several times, grazing in the marshes and even strolling along the beach. One morning, I woke up to find them right outside my tent!
And that's when it happened. I was enjoying a piece of crusty bread with my shrimp scampi when, BAM! A pony snatched it right out of my hand! I was so surprised I didn’t even have time to react. They're quick, I'll tell you that.
