Finding Our Oasis: Campsite B27 at Bayside Drive-In

Finding the Bayside Drive-In Campground was a breeze using GPS. Once we turned off the main road, though, things got a little sandy. Pro-tip: seriously, adjust your tire pressure! It made a huge difference navigating those soft sand roads. Our campsite, B27, was perfect. We were right next to the bay, which meant easy access for launching our paddleboards. The ground was level, making tent setup super smooth. The view of Sinepuxent Bay from our tent was killer; we could literally watch the sunrise without even getting out of our sleeping bags (okay, maybe after a quick coffee!).

Respect the Locals: Campground Rules

Assateague Island is home to some very special residents: wild horses! It's super important to respect their space. The campground rules are strict: maintain a 10-foot distance, never feed them, and always store your food properly inside the bear-resistant locker provided at each campsite. Fines for breaking these rules are hefty – like, $100 per infraction. Seriously, don't mess with the ponies (or the rangers!). Speaking of rangers, we saw them patrolling in a pickup truck at least three times a day, so they're definitely keeping an eye on things. Rinse & Repeat: Bathrooms & Showers

The bathhouse near B27 was newly renovated, which was a major plus. They had individual shower stalls, which offered some privacy. The showers were push-button timed, so you had to keep pressing the button to keep the water flowing. The water temperature, though… let's just say it was an experience. It fluctuated wildly, going from scalding hot to freezing cold in a matter of seconds. Definitely a wake-up call! There was also a foot-washing station outside, which was clutch for rinsing off all that sand. The bathrooms were mostly clean, but they occasionally ran out of soap in the dispensers, so maybe bring your own just in case.

Sunsets, Sea Glass, & Sinepuxent Bay: Activities

Assateague is an outdoor lover's paradise! Here are some of our fave activities:

Paddleboarding at Sunset

We rented paddleboards from a local vendor, Assateague Adventures, for a sunset paddleboarding excursion on Sinepuxent Bay. It cost $40/hour, but it was worth every penny. The water was calm, the sunset was gorgeous, and we even spotted dolphins! It was magical. We highly recommend bringing a waterproof phone case (trust us!). Beachcombing for Treasures

Beachcombing is a must-do on Assateague. We spent hours searching for sea glass and interesting shells. Our secret spot? North of the lifeguard station after high tide. We're all about delicious and sustainable camping meals. We cooked up some black bean burgers grilled on a portable propane grill (using Beyond Meat patties, obvi). We also made a one-pot pasta primavera in our Jetboil – super easy and minimal cleanup! We're obsessed with reusable containers, like Stasher bags and silicone food wraps, for storing leftovers and pre-chopped veggies. It's all about minimizing food waste and keeping our impact low. Bug Battles & Tech Troubles: Challenges

Okay, let's be real: camping isn't always sunshine and rainbows. The biggest challenge was the constant battle against biting insects – mosquitoes and greenhead flies are relentless! We tried everything: DEET insect repellent, permethrin-treated gear, long sleeves… and we still got bitten. Prepare yourselves!

Another challenge was keeping our electronics charged. We brought a portable solar charger (Anker PowerCore Solar 20000), but it barely worked because the coastal fog often blocked the sun. One of our favorite things to do is organize a mini-beach cleanup during our camping trips. This time, we focused on collecting microplastics and cigarette butts. We weighed our collection (0.5 lbs) and were proud to do our part in preserving the environment.
