Apostle Islands Treasure Hunt: Family, Kayaks, a...

6 min read

For generations, whispers of a family legend have echoed through our reunions: a great-great uncle, a bit of a rogue, supposedly buried treasure somewhere in the Apostle Islands in the early 1900s. Was it pirate gold? Stolen jewels? We never knew the details, only the tantalizing possibility that a fortune might be waiting beneath the Wisconsin soil. This summer, we decided to embark on a multi-generational road trip to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore – my parents, my teenage kids, and myself – to finally uncover the truth. Was this just another family vacation, or were we actually on a treasure hunt?

Our family in front of the Lake Superior sign. A multi-generational family road trip indeed!

Day 1: Madeline Island Ferry and Big Bay State Park

Our adventure began with a scenic ferry ride to Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands. The crisp Lake Superior air filled our lungs, carrying the scent of pine and the distant cry of gulls. The sun glinted off the choppy water as the ferry churned its way across. What was our first stop? Big Bay State Park, of course!

We plunged into the cool, shady depths of the boreal forest, a welcome respite from the summer sun. Towering pines and whispering birches lined the trails as we hiked towards the shoreline. The kids grumbled a little at first, but their complaints quickly faded as we reached the breathtaking views of Lake Superior. The grandparents, too, were revitalized by the beautiful scenery. The turquoise water stretched out to the horizon, dotted with the silhouettes of distant islands. This hike was a great intro to our Apostle Islands family vacation and an excellent way to stretch our legs after the drive.

Day 2: Bayfield and Whitefish Boil

The charming town of Bayfield, the gateway to the Apostle Islands, beckoned the next day. We strolled along its picturesque streets, browsing the local shops and soaking in the small-town atmosphere. But what's a trip to Wisconsin without some local cuisine?

We decided to experience a traditional Whitefish Boil that evening. The smoky aroma of burning wood filled the air as we gathered around the massive kettle. The "boil master" dramatically added the whitefish, potatoes, and onions, causing a spectacular eruption of flames as the fish oils overflowed. The taste? Absolutely delicious! The flaky whitefish, perfectly seasoned with just salt, was a true Wisconsin delicacy. And the grandparents? They were in heaven! They hadn't had a whitefish boil since they were kids, and the experience brought back a flood of happy memories. It was great to experience this Midwest family adventure with them.

Day 3: Kayaking the Sea Caves

The heart of our Apostle Islands adventure was undoubtedly our kayaking trip. What’s the best way to experience the Apostle Island’s unique sea caves? By kayak, without a doubt!

Our guided kayaking tour of the Apostle Islands. The sandstone cliffs are so vibrant and interesting!

We joined a guided kayaking tour, paddling along the rugged sandstone cliffs that define the Apostle Islands coastline. The vibrant colors of the rock formations – reds, oranges, browns, and creams – were simply stunning. The water was crystal clear, allowing us to peer down at the rocky bottom below. Paddling through the sea caves was an unforgettable experience. The waves gently lapped against the walls, creating echoing sounds that amplified the sense of wonder.

Here’s what each family member thought:

  • "I loved squeezing through the tight passages and seeing the sunlight filter through the openings," said my teenage daughter, Sarah.
  • "The colors of the rocks were just amazing," exclaimed my son, Tom. "I took so many pictures!"
  • "It reminded me of the olden days, you know when your great-great uncle was searching for a place to keep his loot. The caves were a perfect hiding spot," chuckled Grandpa.
  • "Just being out on the water, surrounded by such natural beauty, was so peaceful," sighed Grandma contentedly.

The family kayaking Apostle Islands sea caves was a definite success!

Day 4: Island Boat Tour and Lighthouses

Day four brought another maritime adventure: an island boat tour focused on the Apostle Islands' historic lighthouses. We cruised past several islands, each with its own unique lighthouse perched atop. These lighthouses, some dating back to the 19th century, stand as silent sentinels, guiding ships through the treacherous waters of Lake Superior. Did we get any closer to finding that treasure?

Well, not exactly. But the locations of the islands sparked some interesting speculation. We figured if Great-Great Uncle was hiding treasure on one of the islands, it would probably be one further out with a lighthouse. After all, who would suspect a thing with all the workers coming and going?

We learned about the history of the lighthouses, the lives of the keepers, and the countless shipwrecks that litter the bottom of the lake. While the exact location of the treasure remained elusive, we all agreed that the boat tour provided a fascinating glimpse into the Apostle Islands' rich maritime history. This was a great way to learn more about Apostle Islands history and lore.

Day 5: Door County Side Trip and Cherries/Cheese Curds

No trip to Wisconsin is complete without a side trip to Door County, a peninsula renowned for its charming towns, picturesque scenery, and, of course, its delicious food. What’s a trip to Door County without experiencing its famous flavors?

A view of the rocky shoreline, and the water off the coast, during our trip to Door County!

We indulged in Door County cherries in every form imaginable – fresh, dried, juiced, and, of course, in delicious pies. The kids devoured them! We also sampled Wisconsin cheese curds, those fresh, squeaky delights that are a true Wisconsin staple. The satisfying "squeak" with every bite was music to our ears. It was a treat that kept everyone happy, young and old! This Door County family trip was the perfect sweet ending to our Wisconsin adventure.

Conclusion: The Real Treasure

Our multi-generational road trip to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore was more than just a vacation; it was an experience that brought our family closer together. The grandparents relived cherished childhood memories, sharing stories and laughter with their grandchildren. The parents bonded with their children amidst the beauty of nature, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And the teens, initially glued to their phones, discovered the magic of the outdoors, marveling at the sea caves, the lighthouses, and the vast expanse of Lake Superior.

Did we find Great-Great Uncle's hidden treasure? No, not exactly. But we discovered something far more valuable: the treasure of shared experiences, the bonds of family, and the joy of exploring the world together. The real treasure wasn't gold or jewels, but the memories we made as a family, a wealth that will endure far beyond any monetary value.
